"I believe God is a sadist, but probably doesn't even know it"

by Bruguru, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Aug 11 '07
Pros: Gritty, realistic war film.
Cons: Full screen DVD has mediocre picture quality.
The Second World War has probably spawned more movies than any other conflict in human history. Many of them are very good, but often a product of their time, in that they tend to sugar coat the nature of war. Mostly that was done to avoid scaring off ...

Cross of Iron

by ososmistress , Nov 11 '01
Pros: This movie was made looking at the foot soldiers point of view
Cons: Some scenes are quite graphic. Not for children or teens
I enjoyed this movie very much because it presented the plain soldiers point of view. I felt that it was an accurate portrayal, gruesome in some places, but entertaining for anyone who enjoys war movies. Most WWII movies are seen from the American point...

Last Refuge of a Scoundrel: The Cross of Iron

by George_Chabot George_Chabot is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Movies, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Apr 01 '03
Pros: Great antiwar film. Peckinpah's direction, action, James Coburn, Maximilian Schell
Cons: Should be better known. Deserves a loving restoration and Deluxe Release DVD.
Director Sam Peckinpah was an ornery cuss. From his earliest days writing scripts for television westerns (Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, The Rifleman) to his latter days as a full-blown Hollywood director, his times were full of controversy....

Come with me to where The Crosses of Iron Grow

by habla , Jul 08 '00
Pros: Dramatic, Well Shot, Some of the best battle scenes ever filmed.
Cons: Some will not agree with the film's perspective
I love to watch WWII movies. I find that period of history gripping and am eager to watch films of this genre. Cross of Iron directed by Sam Peckinpah, and starting James Coburn, Maximilliam Schell, and James Mason is one of the best WWII films ever...

An important war movie

by adamarket , Feb 28 '03
Pros: Well-acted, well-directed, anti-war war movie
Cons: Dated 70's look, slow storyline
'Cross of Iron' is obviously a product of the post-Vietnam era in its themes and sensibilities. Peckinpah chooses to set his anti-war film on the Russian Front in World War II instead of in the jungles of Southeast Asia. The only connection the film...
