"A Man Has To Be What He Is. You Can't Break The Mold." Shane
Good versus evil, the taming of the West, and the (in)ability of a man to change are the predominate themes explored in Director George Stevens' classic western...

Pros: Fine adapted screenplay, great cast, good direction Cons: Some continuity issues
When I was in ninth grade at Riviera Jr. High School (now Riviera Middle School), one of the two second-semester reading assignments in Mrs. Allen’s third period English class was Jack Schaefer’s second and perhaps best-known novel, Shane. Set ...

Pros: Alan Ladd and Jack Palance's performances--this is a classic. Cons: The kid's starting to bug me.
As part of my ongoing struggle to get on my father-in-law "Big Jim's" good side, I've been checking out his collection of John Wayne movies. He's easily the biggest John Wayne fan I know, and I'm becoming the receptacle for his knowledge and love of the...

Pros: A classic American Western. Cons: Long by contemporary standards.
SHANE, starring Alan Ladd, was an instant hit as an American Western movie when it was released in 1953. Directed by George Stevens, it stars Ladd as the title character. Other actors include Jean Arthur, Van Heflin, Jack Palance, Brandon de...

Pros: Some odd, interesting scenes; relationships between some of the characters. Cons: Not much info or background about the main character or his motivations.
The idea of the mysterious lead character has existed in a number of Westerns throughout time. Ive not seen a whole lot of Westerns in my time, although Ive seen a fair number of John Ford films, as well as a few scattered titles here and...

Pros: Everything I've said in my review Cons: that stupid truck!
Shane was probably and fortunately the best example of ensemble casting ever to hit the silver screen. There wasn't a single "minor" actor in the entire cast.
Shane was played by Alan Ladd, who died in 1964 of a brain embolism....

Pros: good story, cast, script Cons: familiar characters and themes
"Shane" is one of those classic films that
is famous even among those who have never
seen it. This is partly because of the
film's reputation, but mostly due to the
much-parodied closing scene where the little
kid...

Pros: cast, cinematography Cons: fight scenes, unoriginality
I suppose this movie was given a new lease of life by that underrated thriller `The Negotiator.’ I’d heard of it for other reasons, but I was always going to be watching it with Kevin Spacey and Samuel Jackson in mind. Unfortunately, it gave away...

Pros: Tight direction, good acting, elements of modernism Cons: Slightly repressive - dulled the potential illicit romance
Reading Shane, it's difficult to separate it from the movie starring Alan Ladd. Oddly, both are about transitions (or at least partly). The movie only hints at the romance between the rancher's wife and itinerant Shane, but that's about the only...

Pros: Movie for the whole family Cons: None
I had seen Shane many years ago in school after reading the book and I wanted to have my family see it. We recently watched it on video.
The movie is a nice "old-fashioned" western. By "old-fashioned", I mean that there...

Pros: It's really about nothing, but it's good! Cons: Too slow at times.
I'm wondering, how do Hollywood producers and writers work today. They try to make up the most diffi ...

Pros: all Cons: none
A timeless western, splendid in every way. The cinematography, music score, story line, and last but not least, first-rate acting by all, marks this movie as one of the three best westerns ever made (High Noon/The Searchers).
The gunfight...
