Good laptop, poor support

by jim56 , May 30 '04
Pros: Good value, nice looking.
Cons: Poor support.
I bought this laptop for my college age daughter. Price was good compared to local computer stores and the laptop is very nice for what you pay. Everything was fine for about a month and then I decided to buy her a wireless PCMCIA card. That's when the ...

Get Inspired!

by zuzubar , Nov 19 '04
Pros: Fast, affordable, and GOOD battery life
Cons: Wireless problems and overheating
The Dell Inspiron 5150 is one top of the line notebook. It took a while to find the right computer but when I saw the 5150 I felt it was a perfect computer to fit my needs. I don’t really require much on a notebook, except word processing and ...

Questionable DELL quality again...

by karma_929 , Jul 22 '04
Pros: Decent feature group
Cons: Wireless is useless, keyboard layout is poor, HEAVY laptop!, DELL support
I purchased this laptop through work to replace my 4150 which got farmed out to a junior. Not too pleased with what arrived. First off, I can't get over how heavy this unit is compared to the 4150... it's a TANK! My leather Samsonite case is literally ...

Great, but weighty!
by firelilly ,Aug 03 '04
Pros: Reliable, big-screen, loads of RAM, and a combo drive!
Cons: Heavy! This is a weighty little monster!
This Dell was a replacement for my well-used Compaq. I was nervous about switching, but for the price, this is the best laptop out there!
It's speed and clarity are amazing. The extra RAM is a bit pricey, but it allows many programs to run at the same time. Also, the combo CD-RW/DVD drive is a bonus. With three ports, it's easy to plug in a printer, scanner, and external floppy at the same time!
It is reliable, sound, and a great buy overall and I would highly recommend it.

The downside is that customer service wavers between being great and being downright horrendous. Also, the computer is heavy for a modern laptop. Carrying it around could become a burden if one travels with it a lot. - - - Also, the computer comes with a bundle of pre-installed software, but most of it isn't very useful for most folks. But, again, if you are looking for a low-priced, reliable, versital laptop, this is it!

DELL IS BAD, JUST BAD AND THEN VERY BAD!!!
by ahyour ,Jun 05 '04
Pros: NONE AS FAR AS I CAN SEE.
Cons: everything from wireless to the design
EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS NOTE BOOK IS BAD. FROM THE DESIGN THAT MAKES TYPING VERY DIFFICULT, TO THE WIRELESS THAT NEVER WOKRS AND CRASHES ALL THE TIME. TO THE WEIGHT, AND THE DELL SUPPORT THAT IS NEVER THERE. AND THERE IS THE VIDEO CARD THAT MAKE THE SYSTEM GET VERY HOT IN A SHORT TIME. WAIT THERE IS EVEN MORE, THE SCREEN IS FOSSY AND WHY DO THEY HAVE TO MAKE THE AC ADAPTOR WEIGHT SO MUCH………. I COULD GO ONE AND ON, BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS THIS, DO NOT BUY DELL JUST WALK AWAY NOW!!!!! OR YOU WILL BE SORRY LIKE ME. Here is my email address write me and I will tell you even more.ahyour@excite.com

don't buy a dell
by lochness06 ,Jan 11 '06
Pros: top notch technology and online tech support(limited)
Cons: power jack fails, overheats, cd drive faulty, phone tech support poor and costly
dell sent me a fairly nice computer, but I could have found one with better tech support and a better price for what this cost me. After 1 year the power jack stopped working (which can only be fixed by dell by repalcing the motherboard for $600) and so did my cd/cd-r/dvd drive. this all happened just as I was out of my warranty. The computer worked fine for a little bit, but it started giving me problems after 1 year. It would be nice to find yourself a computer that lasts the average 3 year span that it takes for technology to make your computer obsolete. Their tech support works fine online, but if you want to talk to a human-being, you'd have better luck with your garbage man.
others online have also complained of it overheating and shutting down because of a malplaced chip under your palm which is affected when you put pressure on it.

This Laptop Rocks
by prism7guy ,Jun 16 '04
Pros: High power, very fast
Cons: None really, bit heavy.
Hi, i bought this laptop the other day, and i have never looked back, The other day at school, we had a network game, the battery lasted well over an hour! But eventually it went flat, which was not a bad time for it to run a demanding game for over and hour and a half, then we both started to charge our laptops, and play another game, mine was charged in about 3 hours, while my friends was at about 65%, so it is very fast. The battery life is long during game and doing nothing at all. The graphics are amazing with the nVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200, the computer runs very fast and smooth with 512MB DDR, at 2.8GHZ with 40GB Hard drive. The only down side to the laptop is that is is a little on the heavy side, but that doesn't bother me too much, and the cooling fan's intake is on the underside, meaning the laptop cannot be used if on a carpet or placed on your legs, this is a pain, but to get round this just sit it on a tray then you can. All in all this is a great machine!

Dell? Not if you're smart
by bikegal42 ,Sep 17 '04
Pros: ads are good. when it works, functions well. nice sized screen. powerful, pretty fast.
Cons: dies after three months. heavy. doesn't come with everything it's supposed to have.
My 5150 DIED three months and a week after I got it. Trying to get Dell reps on the phone was sheer misery.

I even went to the "live" chat forum to talk to a rep. No one showed up.

I should have sent it back when it arrived without the free six months of AOL as advertised. When I bought this issue up, I got a $60 credit. But only after my e-mail was ignored and I threatened to send the computer back (this was within the first 21 days).

I should have.

I work from home so this is a major pain. of course, Dell doesn't have loaner computers, even when it's their fault. So I'll be without the computer for at least a week since it took two days for the Box to arrive that I am to return it in. And of course, repairs will take up to five days.

I just KNOW it won't be right when it returns.

I am so sorry I purchased a Dell product. Service and product are way less than desirable.

Good luck if you get one.

POS
by tgaliv ,Aug 17 '05
Pros: NONE
Cons: EVERYTHING
This is the worst POS I've ever had, and I've bought numerous computers and other laptops. Their service sucks, too. If you decide to buy one of these get the ext warranty because you're going to need it. I've had my motherboard replaced and now it needs to be replaced AGAIN!!! Do some searching online, and you'll find others who have repeatedly the same problems. Heck, look on Ebay. A lot of those for sale are because they're not working.

Dell Inspiron 5150
by gbalasub ,Dec 10 '03
Pros: Fast and quiet and cheap
Cons: Fuzzy image and fonts
I bought the Inspiron 5150 with 3.06 Ghz processor and 32 MB nVidia GeForce 5200 card. The notebook is ultra quiet and very very fast. The con is that the font and image quality are really bad. I have had laptops since 1999 and this is about my fourth. I regret to say that this is the worst one in terms of bad graphics. I have been on the phone with tech support for hours (they are pretty good by the way - contrary to what you read - very polite and quite knowledgeable) but with no luck. Considering I am a software consultant, if I can't fix this, who can? So I am planning to return it and get my money back. It hurts because I have spent at least 30 + hours with this thing transferring my stuff because I thought that I could fix the very apparent display problem easily later. Advice - check out the laptop and make sure everything is working fine before transferring your files and getting rid of your old laptop.

5150
by sweetsmlc ,Mar 19 '07
Pros: Reliability, dependability, customer service.
Cons: Weight.
This is a great laptop! I have had mine for about 2-3 years. I did have some repairs done due to a recall. But Dell support was great and did the work fast. The screen size is nice, nice picture, clear and bright. The computer itself is a nice size. A little heavy but still easy to tote around. Its been a reliable computer with no major problems to report. I have recommended this computer to my family and friends, due to the computers performance and the fact that Dell has always been so good with customer service. If I were to grade this computer, I would give it an A.

A Photographer's Opinion - Not recommended !
by shetlands ,Feb 09 '04
Pros: Competitive pricing Latest processors available.
Cons: Poor display quality. Poor support. There is no real "Customer Care" at Dell anymore.
I have a new 5150. Service and support have been substandard and if you are a photographer or designer, you might try SONY or TOSHIBA for a better alternative. I am disappointed with my 5150 in terms of display quality for pro digital photography work and will never buy from Dell again. Their Customer Care people are not empowered and one part of the company cannot communicate with the other. Also, I understand that there are some recycled parts being used in some of their computers.

Dell displays are behind the times in terms of technology -- save yourself some anguish and check out the new Toshiba and Sony Onyx Black type of displays if you need to do critical photo editing and design work.

Dell Inspiron 5150
by kellzach ,Oct 11 '03
Pros: Speed,Great screen
Cons: Little heavy, expensive RAM
Great machine, only problem is that the internet access was slow. Found out that it was the IE 6.0 instead of the machine.

Only get upgrade of ram if it is free. Buy ram from third party vendor like Crucial or Kingston it is a lot cheaper.

Machine is a little heavy. Hard to find cases for laptop.

Same old motherboard problem
by nihilra ,Dec 17 '05
Pros: I liked it while it lasted
Cons: unreliable, hot, heavy
I have also had the problem with the motherboard overheating. 16 months after purchase, it died and is a very costly repair. Others with this problem on the 5150 also report that it overheats again and again. There is even a class action lawsuit in California as it appears to be a manufacturer's defect/ design flaw.

Also note: Pentium 4 processors are no longer offered in any Dell laptop model.
