HP Photosmart. 430 series.. Not so smart after all.

by shoplmart Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 10, Feb 19 '05
Pros: Price, 5x digital zoom, Easy to use.
Cons: Battery hog, Fuzzy LCD, Shutter lag, reliability.
I recently received a Canon PIXMA IP5000 photo printer as a gift; the only problem was I didn't have a digital camera or any type of camera for that matter. Since I have had a positive experience with both my HP computer and DeskJet printer, I ...

Despite their catchy commercials, an HP digital camera is Buyer's Remorse waiting to happen.

by JediKermit Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Mar 16 '05
Pros: Cheap...uh...nice chassis...
Cons: Battery Vampire, no Macro setting, poor LCD screen, fuzzy pictures...
Right now there are some really cool HP (Hewlett Packard) commercials on tv in high rotation. They feature happy, fun, bouncy music, and innovative visuals, making photographs from moving images...the one you see most is the balding guy at his desk, ...

Good for casual snapshots

by dieseldust , Nov 03 '04
Pros: Good picture quality, print direct to printer, light weight and convenient.
Cons: Battery hog, limited controls, colour balance not always accurate.
I purchased this camera as part of a HP's Digital Home Photo Studio System. The price was right and the camera provides us with a second option for family use. Technically this camera is a real point and shoot variety, so don't expect to have too much ...

Okay "camera". Really just a webcam on steroids

by afhouston , Nov 11 '03
Pros: Nice look, small and light, quick load time, slide the cover open and shoot
Cons: Worse picture quality than peers, poor battery life, inaccurate LCD
This camera is a good deal at $100 or less. The best $150 camera is probably the Fuji Finepix 2650. In any case, the camera has a lot of limitations. The battery life for this is very short, regardless of using a rechargeable battery or not. It doe ...

Great Amateur Camera

by dragon_mg , May 19 '04
Pros: Inexpensive, Great Image Quality, good MP to $$$ ratio, Uses SD media
Cons: Off center tripod mounting hole, battery hog
I bought this camera right before I deployed to Iraq. I have owned my share of point-and-shoot digitals, but I wanted one that would give me at least 3 Megapixel, so I settled on this one. My last few cameras have been HP, plus a Sony DSC-U10 in my ...

Consider spending a little more

Pros: Light, inexpensive, good flash
Cons: Terrible color balance, exposure, slow shutter response time
I already had a digital camera I was happy with - a little Casio QVR 4 megapixel. But one day I found myself out of town, and needed a simple digital camera in a hurry. Rushed into the nearest shop and laid down $250 Canadian for an HP Photosmart 435, ...

Cons: A battery piglet (not hog) and small LCD screen.

Would be a nice little camera - if it weren't a battery leech

by parmenides320 , Jul 20 '05
Pros: Easy to use, decent pictures and just the right amount of features
Cons: Consumer Reports states battery life is 35 pictures; I wish they would last that long.

eats up batteries!!!
by emaciana ,Oct 28 '06
Pros: good price, nice looking, good company backing it, durable.
Cons: uses a lot of batteries, contrast issues in pictures.
this camera took alright pictures but it really chomped up batteries. even the lithium rechargable ones. don't even bother using normal alkaline batteries with it. you might end up getting 3 pix out of it. HP is a great company though, but i don't think their strength is in cameras at all. however, their customer service is excellent. i accidentally burned out the battery compartment and they replaced the whole camera, no questions asked. the pictures were for the most part good but a lot of them had contrast issues especially on people's faces. really bright parts and then huge shadows.
the other thing is that it turns on very easily by accident. in my purse i often accidentally turn it on a burn out the battery even faster.

Not bad, but not great either
by chrisaller4470 ,Jun 19 '04
Pros: lightweight, good lens cover/power switch combo, zoom is pretty good, has video with sound
Cons: BATTERY LIFE IS AWFUL!!! Picture quality not great.
This camera has by far the worst battery consumption I have seen yet. I used both alkaline, and NiMH, and they go about 12 shots, and they are cut to 1/3 power. Terrible!

The picture quality is ok, I thought it would be better, but it's really not.

For a cheap camera, it's a good deal. But coming from a family of photographers, it's about to be replaced.

HP435 Repair/Replacement program & Customer Service
by twinreg1 ,Jun 27 '08
Pros: None
Cons: Not enough space
Hp 435 Photosmart's rear screen cracked easily. Called HP for solutions. Repair (expected) more than worth. Given opportunity to exchange camera for "upgrade" to HP307xi (only option given) for $111. Since 3 day return policy in effect I decided to go. Hp's database had different name & address for my Home phone & camera was sent to non-existent address. Fed-Ex called for address correction but name different-no delivery options. Camera returned to HP. HP customer service contacts were (3 times I called to complain) difficult-to-understand individuals who couldn't interpret english very well, transferred to 3rd individual whom was fully competent & corrected address & offered several options for new camera but advised prices were cheaper at local outlets since all exchange cameras are "refurbished". Order cancelled & money refunded 7 business days later even though Visa was charged within one (1) hour.

Good value
by dogmama ,May 14 '04
Pros: If you lose it you can afford to replace it
Cons: Image view doesn't show the real picture quality
I bought mine in January for $140 because basically it was the cheapest. I am a chronic camera-loser so cost is an important feature. I have been pleasantly surprised. Downloading is easy. The photos are gorgeous, really. The only thing I don't like is the quality of the image viewer--it is nothing like the quality of the picture once downloaded to your pc. At first I was deleting all these pictures because they didn't look good in the image viewer. Finally got wise and downloaded to view before deleting; they were all good, in all light conditions.

I'm not a pro, just a snapshot taker, but I love this camera, especially since it didn't cost me a mint, and if I lose it, big deal, I'll buy another one.

WHAT? This is a great camera!
by isaacbuyer ,Apr 16 '04
Pros: Good pics, nice flash, sturdy body- lots of features.
Cons: no optical zoom, burns batteries
what bites, is that I paid $150 for it, however I am very happy with this camera, since it is very sturdy and fairly easy to use. The LCD is great for previewing pics and video, and sorry... that video feature is fantastic. I have taken great mini movies WITH sound and have been happy with the results.

It has a digital zoom and not an optical zoom, so that your zoom is actually a lower resolution/crop of the original picture. I just put a 256mg chip in it, take about 200+ images and delete the bad ones as i go. Last vacation I came back home with 210 great pictures!

I also went on vacation with a 48 pack of AA batteries 'cause this camera loves to eat them up, but from what I understand, all of them do.

Nice flash pics too.

THIS IS A GREAT FIRST CAMERA.

Not Bad for the Price
by kaydeegee ,Aug 10 '05
Pros: Easy use. Lots of Features
Cons: Poor alkaline battery life. Approx 12hrs of battery life with Lithium batteries.
I purchases this camera for $129.95. There are several pros and cons for this camera.

Pros:
1. Lightweight
2. Easy Controls
3. Records 20 sec live video with sound
4. 3 Picture Quality Settings (Good=134 pics, Better=18- 25 pics, Best=11-20 pics) With built in memory and
lots more with Expandable Memory
5. Built in timer
6. Email pics from camera memory
7. Connect camera directly to T.V. for viewing pictures
8. DC adapter outlet
9. Live view or view finder to save power
10. 5 x Zoom
11. 12hrs battery life with ENERGIZER LITHIUM E2
BATTERIES ONLY
12. Can be put on a tripod

Cons:
1. Does not photograph well in dark places or night
2. Poor background illumination with flash
3. Poor Alkaline battery life
4. Zoomed photos could be clearer

I found this camera to have more pros than cons. For the price it is a bargain. It could be of better quality but again, considering the price; it is a steal.

I payed more for less
by kewl ,Jan 09 '04
Pros: Acceptable size of internal memory.
Cons: Don't even try the video feature, you won't get much.
I trust HP products for there long life and efficient work over the years, but until I bought this camera, most of that changed. I owned a Photosmart 320 that could hold 7 images in best quality and had video with no sound. This was stolen and I decided to upgrade to a newer model, All I got was a box with more images and extreme low quality video with miserable sound. I am able to fulfill the camera usage with my theater group, and able to load the images to my Mac quicker and easier. If you intend to buy a digital camera, RESEARCH FIRST, the moment I dropped my research I got this. I would have invested my money in a camera with more memory with no video. Before you buy, understand what you want to do with the camera, I intended to take pictures of my stage work. These cameras are not designed to special lighting like you would see with those nice film cameras that the user can control the ISO speed. If you do buy, wait for a sale, refurbished and discontinued prices, then it would be worth it.

Cons: Battery time, picture quality, general quality

Very Bad Experience
by cbhargava ,Jan 11 '05
Pros: ok picure quality for what you pay
Cons: Very bad design, worst customer service
Within 40 days of buying the camera the trouble started. Whenever I turn on the camera, the red light near the viewfinder blinks for a few times and the camera doesn't power up. I had a chat session with HP tech support and they told me that they will do a cross shipment and I would get the camera in 5 days. I didn't get the camera within the expected timeframe. I again contacted HP support and they said that they can't do anything. So far I haven't got the replacement camera.

Basic Camera
by srm806 ,May 26 '05
Pros: cheap price good pic quality hp download software makes it easy
Cons: poor quality video, zoom not great slow start
I had minimal expectations for a camera I was taking with me to Afghanistan. At least 3 mega pixel, USB connection, minimal video and some zoom, and this has it all under $100.

You need a memory card with most cameras and I have one with this one, so space is not an issue, it takes the SD cards. I swap rechargeable batteries and it does not lose pics or video so I don't know if this is a battery hog, don't care. The video is ok, produces mpegs, but it is grainy and sometimes does not turn out, if the video has lots of motion (from a car looking out). Video is more grainy taking indoor shots, but outdoor video is more acceptable.

This is the cheapest camera which does what I want. I wish the video was clearer, and it started up a little quicker, but it still works in this harsh environment while wrapped in a zip loc.

Has some capability for flash settings (red eye, no flash, etc.), so the flash capability is ok. A few times the camera ran out of batteries when the cover was accidentally opened in my pocket.

Love the camera!
by baykapple ,Jul 20 '05
Pros: Optical viewfinder; Nice picture quality; Ease of use; Retractable lens cover.
Cons: Zoom-not practical===crop with software
This is my first digital camera --bought it for 99 CDN (75 US) dollars December 2004............I have a high end Nikon SLR with lots of lenses....not digital, unfortunately.........so rather that jump in and purchase digital SLR - I wanted to try out a digital camera........and bought this camera.....it's great.....it captures the moment....and has a nice optical viewfinder.........that is the main reason that I bought this camera........most other cameras have tiny viewfinders.......or simply LCD screen to view.

This camera is what it is....point and shoot.....also takes movies which is fun.........

I love digital......get rechargeable batteries.....can take up to 150 or more on a charge...I use the highest quality setting. It is easy to download.

I will definitely move up later.......but for now...this is great.

GREAT CAMERA
by agrifim ,Jan 06 '05
Pros: Small, Light good picture quality
Cons: Battery life sucks
This camera is great. Low price, desent quality and great size. This camera may not take the best pictures but for the price what do you expect. It is just as good as most of it's competitors. The battery life is horrible, but that comes with every digital. I recomend buying a set of Energizer rechargible batteries that are specialy designed for digital cameras. All in all this camera is great, I own many other HP products and am happy with all of them.

Compact, and Powerful
by Teach_4 ,Dec 14 '03
Pros: The size & ease of use. Speed of changing data on the menu screen.
Cons: As with most Digital Cameras it drains batteries dramatically. Purchase rechargeable batteries.
I purchased this camera With the PhotoSmart 7660 printer. For the money it is an awesome buy. It will fit in a woman's purse, or a man's shirt pocket. The clarity of the screen is equal to a high end product. The camera has three storage modes which provide different types of quality in your picture. Adaptable to a tripod, has a wonderful automatic flash feature.

We like our camera!
by codysmommy ,Jan 11 '04
Pros: Compact size; durable; video recorder
Cons: short battery life (live view)
My husband and I received this camera as a Christmas present, about a month ago. We have been very satisfied with it. Of course, if you are a professional photographer, looking for the quality of Olan Mills, this camera should not be used. However, if you are like myself, the "everyday photographer", this camera is perfect for pics of family and friends. My only warning....be sure to purchase a set of rechargeable batteries along with the camera. It will eat your alkaline batteries faster than a termite through wood.

I Wouldn't Recommend It
by aimwilk ,Dec 09 '03
Pros: Price
Cons: Battery Life, Ease of Operation, Memory, Flash, Picture Quality
I thought this camera was a great deal, but once I got it home I took about 8 pictures and downloaded them before the batteries ran out. The manual tells you not to use the LCD because it drains the batteries, but guess what? The first thing that comes on when you turn the camera on is the LCD, which you have to quickly turn off every time. It has no memory regarding time/date and I gave up re-setting it.
The flash doesn't work very well either - when on manual flash it would periodically decide it didn't need a flash - indoors with poor lighting - and then, you guessed it, you must use the LCD to view and delete the black image, thus quickly draining the batteries.
It's just not worth charging batteries for a couple of hours to use the camera for a few minutes each time.
I am taking this camera back and reading other reviews to find something better. In talking to people this seems to have VERY poor battery life.
Image quality is also questionable. Let's just say, "I wouldn't recommend it."

HP 435 digital camera
by coathanger4 ,Jul 28 '04
Pros: cheap price, good day time photos, L.C.D screen.
Cons: Bad night time photos, dosn't work as a web cam.
Good bang for your buck, This camera isn't a high quality camera but for the price it's good. I bought this camera because i wanted a digital camera but I didn't wan't to pay hundreds of dollars. This camera is only good for close up pictures because it donsn't have optical zoom however scince it has a good amount of mega pixal once it's on your computer you can zoom and that work's good if you don't mind the extra work. When I first got the camera and after a couple of hours and already gone through seveal dollars worth of batteries I said this is crazy and bought a charger and some NiHm rechargable batteries and that solved the problem. Now I only have one complaint and thats taking pictures at night if your taking a picture of some one fairly close they turn out okay but everything around them is completly black and if your trying to take a picture of a a big object like a building at night it won't turn out.

Took it back. Terrible battery length. Poor quality, bad flash, spots, pixelated
by l8rgator ,Oct 05 '03
Pros: Small size. Takes average batteries & upgrade cards
Cons: Picture quality, on switch, flash, battery life. All terrible.
I put a new set of batteries in this camera after mine lasted less than a day, and 5 minutes later it was completely out again (at least enough to say "not enough power for real-time display". And the pictures were very disappointing. Distance shots with flash were black, closer shots were flooded, medium shots had white spots. I'm no camera person, but this isn't anything like my other digital cameras. And the pictures that did turn out (perfect lighting, no flash, 4 ft distance - looked like 10 in the picture) were pixelated beyond acceptable - and I was only looking to print 1" X 1.5 inch pictures on ID cards!! Took it back after 3 days. Looking for suggestions on replacement!!!! Oh, also, compact size was really nice, but flip-lens cover on switch isn't secure so you can't stick it in your pocket or it'll turn itself on. kjmunoz@hotmail.com

A Good Idea, A Few Annoying Flaws
by derfenovap ,Jan 25 '04
Pros: + Good Flash + Good overall image + Nice interface + Price
Cons: - High battery drain - No real macro for close up shots
For a starter camera or for someone who doesnt want to take digital photography seriously, this is a fine camera. It wiil take nice pictures even in the dark. However how it does so leads to its downfall.

The overall interface is impressive. HP have really made a comfortable and easy to use menu system and buttons.

However its major flaw is that in battery time.

I found myself constantly frustrated by the rate in which this camera ATE batteries.

Another annoying thing was that the macro function was quite poor. For a digital camera that produced a good image i expected an ok macro. This was jot the case.

Overall, its a very usable camera, and very friendly and at the price i bought it on retail i was pleased. However shortly after i found myself replacing it.

SIMPLY TERRIBLE! STAY AWAY FROM THIS!
by icemanx3 ,May 20 '04
Pros: Absolutely none.
Cons: Everything about this camera.
This is the absolute WORST camera I have ever purchased.

TERRIBLE spotty pixelated images on medium (printable-haha yeah right) setting. Flash is not reliable at the right times. LCD basically turns to a pixelated mess when you use the zoom feature.

New set of batteries lasts approx 3-5 MINUTES.

I am SO UPSET. I bought this camera and my first use was tonight at my sons very first pre-school play. I basically got a bunch of low end, blurry, pixelated pictures of my 3 y/o son.

My old 1.5 megapixel canon powershot a50 zoom takes better images on it's lowest setting than this HP does on it's highest!

Got it for 78$ at Fry's...returning it tomorrow...and HP is definitely going to be hearing from me!
