JVC HR-A592U VCR: Inexpensive, simple, logically laid out, and it works

by Horswispr Horswispr is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Electronics, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, May 22 '04
Pros: inexpensive; intuitive layout; looks nice; good resolution and sound quality
Cons: slow rewind; ridiculous instruction manual; one reviewer cites quality control problems
I have a high-end stereo system and listen to lots of music. But I could give a rat's a s s about most of what's on TV, and I rent movies only occasionally. So when my old VCR died, my main criterion for a new one was that it be cheap and that it work. I ...

Great Picture, Low Price

by PennyStretcher , Jan 13 '05
Pros: Price, picture quality, setup.
Cons: Front-only input jacks, jittery "still" picture, lacks advanced features.
I was in the market for a new VCR since the old Sharp in the living room was showing its age. The picture was not so "Sharp" anymore (groan). A good reason for buying now is, there are not that many VCRs on the market any more. DVDs, PVRs, and DVD/VCR ...

Save Your Money!
by g94t ,Jul 30 '05
Pros: Inexpensive, cheap, good recording quality.
Cons: Cheap, poor playback quality.
My wife and I bought this VCR for our office and have since used it for dubbing.

The recording quality is good, but nowhere close to the advertised HQ (high quality).

The playback quality is horrible! During VHS playback, horizontal interference lines are always visible (almost like the tracking is off, but, it's not) regardless of what VCR did the recording - including this unit itself!

I had about 3 months of time in which the menu would not come up when I pressed the button on the remote; I would get only a blue screen and no more. The problem cleared up after I "reset" the VCR (e.g., left it unplugged from A/C power for over 2 hours) and I haven't experienced the symptom since.

Bottom line: it does the job for us, but, I really wish I spent $20 USD more.

DON'T BE TEMPTED
by sirfile ,Oct 11 '05
Pros: Inexpensive product from a well-known company.
Cons: VERY CHEAP PRODUCT FROM A WELL-KNOW COMPANY.
Since VHS is soon to be the Betamax of the decade, a $60 purchase of a name-brand VCR seemed reasonable. Not true! In three days, the menu could not be accessed. Returned to JVC [$7 postage] per instruction from Customer Service. Received replacement unit in two weeks, only to find out that it too was defective, and would not record.

Replacement came with no batteries [should have kept the others], and it appears that the unit is a 2003 model. I have now waited for 45 minutes to speak to my new friends at Customer Service . . . and can hardly wait to hear the Song and Dance routine again.

After purchasing several JVC products, and this big waste of time, my recommendation is to avoid their products!

HORRIBLE -- STAY AWAY!
by tkimbis ,Nov 13 '03
Pros: None.
Cons: Cheap quality, loud, and completely unreliable.
I bought this at Circuit City for about 60 bucks b/c I've always been a JVC fan. This is a piece of crap. First of all, it is incredibly loud -- so loud that you can hear it playing if the movie is on low volume. More importantly, it broke while playing the second VCR tape I played. Now it won't rewind at all (after about 90 min of use) and will only occasionally play. Unfortunately, I had it sitting in the box for 3 mos. prior to using so I can't return, and only 90 day warranty. You'd be better off looking at the tape by holding it up to your face than using this player. It's a piece of garbage.
