Pros: Cheap. DVD Playback/Recording works fine. Lots of inputs/outputs. Cons: Does not reliably write DVD's after time. Few edit functions
Update to my original post. After a year, still plays DVD well, but the recorder does not always record properly. Sometime it will hit a bad patch and the DVD becomes unreadable. Other times the DVD looks ok, but is a little jerky on playback like you ...

Pros: Easy guider is wonderful and firewire input. Cons: Fails to allow copying of discs it creates. Fails during record and locks up machine.
I purchased this about 1 week ago hoping to easily transfer my home video's to DVD. It did not go very well. The first problem was that s-video input had interference unless I also put in the Composite video signal and switched to it first. Secondly, ...

Pros: Supports both + and - formats. Makes dozens of coasters in either format with ease! Cons: Customer support/service. Reliability. Picky about media.
The main reason I bought this particular machine was because it supports both plus and minus formats. It wrote just fine for awhile but then got picky about the media - now it won't play or write even on media it played and wrote on the week before. ...

Works well
by yannick ,Mar 09 '05
Pros: Affordable device, does what it was meant for Cons: none.
We bought this DVD recorder to record training sessions straight from the dv-cam to DVD.
It first takes some practice to find your way in the menu unless you read the manual first.
The quality of the video is adjustable to SP, LP, SLP and the quality depends on that.
The playback works well on our 3 tv/dvd combo Emerson and on our computer's DVD players.
I have no complaint about this product; it does what it is supposed to do.

LiteON LVW 5001
by hopecity ,Jul 15 '04
Pros: User Friendly Cons: Gets real HOT!
The Liteon LVW5001 worries me
So far its user friendly, I can use the unit for viewing VSH tape as long as you have a disk in it the best feature is the Easy Guider. The unit has been recording well and playback is fine but I have only used the disk that came with it, after reading a couple of reviews, I not sure if I made the right move. My main worry right now happens regardless if you are just using it for playback or recording a DVD that is it runs hot. Having electronics background I would say very HOT. Does any one know if this is normal? I did contact the office but I had to leave a phone message I hope they return my call soon. I really like it but I would rather get rid of a lemon. Can some one provide some feedback. Thanks.

Disappointed
by stone999 ,Mar 30 '05
Pros: Excellent for playing DVD videos, jpeg CDs, and recording from basic cable Cons: Will not always load discs or access titles, freezes up during playback
I've had this unit for a week now. It plays DVD video fine and makes very good recordings from TV. I also liked the jpeg CD slideshow feature. Now for the bad news. I tried playing some finalized DVD+R discs I own. Sometimes the discs won't even load, then later on they will. Sometimes I cannot play a title on a disc, then later on I can. And it has already frozen up on me twice during playback. The fan is a bit loud too. I'm taking this unit back for a refund. Sorry Liteon, but this unit failed miserably.

Piece of junk
by erked ,Jan 19 '05
Pros: Worked for two months. Cons: Worked for two months and can't get it fixed.
I purchased one of these last July. The first one I rec'd did not work at all and had to be shipped back to retailer. The replacement worked fine - for two months and stopped working completely. I contacted the manufacturers support group who told me to send back the remote and a prepaid envelope to receive firmware. That was a month ago and I've received nothing back from them. Yesterday I sent another email and they are telling me to go buy a remote from some online store and download their firmware. First, why didn't they tell me to download the firmware. Second, why did they tell me to send them my remote if all I needed was firmware. Third, why are they telling me to go buy another remote when they were the ones who told me to send them mine. The player is a piece of junk and so is the manufacturer. Beware.

DO NOT BUY LITE-ON PRODUCTS
by katzkup ,May 17 '06
Pros: cheap Cons: short life duration
May 11, 2006
DO NOT BUY LITE-ON PRODUCTS
Lite-On DVD Recorders are CHEAP
Model LIN LVW-5001
On 10/01/2004 I purchased the above DVD Recorder.
After 19 months and approximately 100 uses it appears the motor has stopped working. The discs no longer spin and the unit says "no disc". I'm very upset and thoroughly disgusted that this product has already failed, even before the batteries provided with the remote.

Buyer beware !!
by jr082 ,Feb 12 '05
Pros: Easy to carry out to the trash where it belongs. Cons: Piece of JUNK !
I purchased this recorder in September. The unit worked fine for about two weeks, and then I experienced the following problems: 1) the unit would not always record properly, 2) the unit would not always erase the DVD properly, and would then make the DVD unusable, 3) the DVDs I recorded would not play in any other DVD player I owned, which the unit was advertised to do, and 4),the unit would sometimes freeze up during playback. After many go rounds with Liteon support (the gem being "did you go to the website and download new firmware ?", ... why EXCUSE
me for not thinking of that !!!), I returned the unit to Liteon. They sent me a refurbished unit which worked great for one day, then experienced many of the same problems I just listed. The unit when out in the trash last Tuesday, and I bought a new VCR. My advice, stay far far away from this brand of DVD recorder.
