Pros: remote control, cheap, cools well, easy to operate, warranty Cons: very loud when in operation
When I moved into my first home, I was without central air conditioner. I wasnt too concerned about this because the Philadelphia weather isnt so bad compared to Florida weather. I thought I would make it with no problem because I had two ...
Pros: Cools great, handy remote, 5 year on site warranty Cons: Noisy wall shaker
I have central air but living alone I felt it was wasteful to cool the whole house at night. So I decided to put a window unit in the master bedroom. Home Depot had a Maytag 6000 BTU unit for $129. With a quality name like Maytag and a five year on site p ...
Pros: cheap, made by reputable manufacturer, removes humidity well. Cons: somewhat weak, a little noisy and doesn't move enough air.
I bought this thing for my cottage at home depot for $188 canadian. seemed like a good buy. This thing, like all Maytag air conditioners, is not actually made by Maytag - instead, they are contracted to Fedders North America...a major manufacturer of ...
Pros: Seemed to cool the room. Cons: Noisy! Fedders gave wrong service provider after half an hour on hold. Then failed worse!
I saw the unit in Home Depot, and figured that because it had a pretty LCD that it was one of the new generation of efficient quiet AC's. I was RATHER surprised by the loud racket it made when running the compressor. And watching it cycle the ...
Excellent Value For The Money by almarconi ,Aug 08 '04
Pros: Price, Ease of Installation, Simple to Operate Cons: Can't Adjust Air Flow Up or Down
I purchased the unit from the Home Depot on clearance for $84.00. Installation was straight forward and took about 30 minutes. The noise complaints, in my opinion, were unfounded. I did not find the unit to be that loud. I have a 12,000 BTU Carrier installed in another room and it makes more noise than the Maytag. Perhaps the other reviewers did not install the unit properly. The controls are easy to operate, the remote is a nice feature. Cools a 12'x12' room quickly and seems to hold the temperature well. I did not notice the compressor cycling on/off very much.
This is a Wall Shaker Machine by njgal234 ,Jul 12 '04
Pros: Cheap - They were on sale for $119. Cons: Noisy, wall-shaking, compressor works too hard for nothing
I bought 2 of the air conditioners in mid-May. After 6 earthquaking and sleepless nights, with the walls shaking and the vibration constantly felt, I went out to replace them with 2 new other models (definitely NOT Maytag!). I am truly disappointed with Maytag, I have a Maytag washer, a Maytag stove, and a Maytag refrigerator, and I'm happy with them. But Maytag Air Conditioners -- I'll never buy them again.

Pros: Nice looking, cools a 250 - 300 sq. foot room with no problem. Cons: LOUD!!! Stay away if you're putting in your bedroom!
Like many others on this site, I picked it up at Home Depot due to its killer price. Looks great, cools great BUT is louder than the garbage truck on my street!!! I'm returning it this weekend and going to Sears.
Pros: Remote is cool. 24 hour timer. Cons: Obscenely noisy, poor air flow.
The compressor shook the whole house. I had condensation on the vents and they cannot be adjusted vertically so the top of the room stays worm and the bottom gets cold. After one sleepless night I took it back. Dont waste your money on this one!
What a noise maker! - returned by superstockboy ,Jun 16 '04
Pros: efficient, inexpensive Cons: Way to noisy!
Picked it up at HD on a whim. Very affordable and had good efficiency rating. Even had a remote control. But i could not keep it.
I am generally a deep sleeper. No matter how I tried, I just could not sleep with this thing in the room. When the compressor kicks on...hit the deck. It rattles and vibrates shaking the entire wall! I would never have expected this kind of performance from a new AC. I am the wiser. And also thankful I have a one small and one large (quiet) Carrier units as backup.
Pros: Nice design and controls Cons: NOISY, Rattles, and NO explanations from Maytag.
The Maytag commercials say they are known for reliability but NOT for their AC units! I bought this 6000 BTU model at Home Depot, installed it and was impresses until the COMPRESSOR kicks in.....it shook the window!
I put it all back in the box and took it back, hoping it was just a bad unit. I got the next one home, and installed it. This one was a LITTLE quieter but UNACCEPTIBLE! I wrote Maytag folks online and they tried to suggest I had it installed wrong (I didn't) and said their units are extremely quiet! They offered NO other explanation or remedy. I quickly took this unit back...this time for a refund in which I bought a 6000 btu Whirlpool which is SO quiet it puts me to sleep! Last year I also tried a Maytag 5000 btu window unit which was fairly quiet....but had thermostat failure in 30 days! This was fixed VIA in home warranty but it looks like the Maytag man will be pretty busy if they keep putting out AC units!
Pros: What good are any of the features if you can't use them? Cons: N O I S E !!!
This thing was so loud that if I tried to describe it, you'd think I was exaggerating. Totally useless, I wouldn't take it for free. The name Maytag means nothing to me anymore...except steer clear!
Horrendously noisy - returned by graham01 ,Jun 03 '04
Pros: Good return policy at HD Cons: Noisy, noisy, noisy!
When the compressor kicked in, I felt like I was standing in a tunnel with a freight train coming up fast. Absolutely impossible to live with. Returned it to HD.
Checked local stores and found a Haier 6000 at Target for a couple of bucks less that is beautifully quiet.
I'm really surprised that Maytag would use choose such a lousy product to market under their name.
I will NEVER buy a Maytag AC again by dbdinnh ,Jun 08 '08
Pros: none Cons: noises that get louder and louder
I bought this last year at a mid-range price to cool the bedroom. We live in NH so it's not like it gets round the clock use but within a month it start making clicking (and louder) noises. Within months, the only way it could be run for any period of time was by jamming books on either side of it (progressively thicker books to cut down on the rattle by pressing in the sides) and wedging progressively thicker wads of cardboard, etc between the body of the unit and the filter. It clearly wouldn't make it into even one week of another summer season so I broke down and bought a GE instead.
I was extremely disappointed with this product. The loud banging noises that come from it when the fan kicks on wakes me up out of a dead sleep. If you are a light sleeper like me, do not buy it. I also felt it did not cool the room that well.
Excellent unit, but compressor is extremely noisy by consumerjoe100 ,Aug 21 '05
Pros: Excellent temperature and humidity control
Excellent auto fan speed control Cons: Compressor is extremely NOISY
I bought this unit a few weeks ago for our bedroom. The unit works very well keeping the bedroom within + - 1 Degree F.
The only bad thing about this air conditioner is the EXTREME NOISE AND VIBRATION generated when the compressor is on for cooling. The people that service Maytag air conditioners told me only the larger units are quieter. I can tolerate some noise while awake, but not when trying to sleep.
Add my diatribe to the noise by jasonguard ,Jul 06 '06
Pros: cools the room and the buttons make sense Cons: too loud to sleep, turns your house into a symphony of rattling vibrations
While writing this, I am waiting on hold with Maytag. It's been over 30 minutes of muzak and annoying reminders about calling the local Maytag repair guy. Wait, they just picked up. Okay, they say that are completely unaware of the noise problem. I told them that my whole front wall is vibrating and rattling the windows in my house. They say they've never heard about this before. They suggest I call my local servicer. I tell them that I already did and it'll be two weeks before they can come out and then mostly likely do nothing. Lovely. What next? Oh, wait. I'm on hold again. Okay, they're back. I've got another number to call for a servicer that's 2 hours away. Fine. But what about the emails that I've sent? I've gotten no response so far. Oh, the website has the wrong email address you say? Whatever. Can I talk to your boss? Oh, you are the boss. Lovely. Click. Okay, I've called another local servicer and got an aswering service and left a message. Does anyone know where to turn for some accountability for this crappy product?
Maytag has chosen to outsource production of their A/C units to Fedders, who ultimately outsources production to China. I'm not sure which Chinese manufacturer produces this product, but mine lasted only two years before a compressor failure. Maytag's warranty may be for 5 years, but when it takes over a month to receive parts for a warranted repair, one has to wonder how good the warranty really is. I will never buy another Maytag product again (similar repair experience with their washer and dryer); I just hope Whirlpool realizes the problems they inherited when buying Maytag. "The Dependability People"? Not in my book.
