Pros: Supposed to be inexpensive Cons: See review.
Be very careful with Packet8, read Terms and Conditions very carefully. I did not try their video-phone service, just regular residential voice service, back in November 2004. Voice connection within the US was acceptable however noticeably worse from ‘ ...

Pros: Easy to use, good quality voice and video, great support, solid quality. Cons: a little pricey, but rebate helps a lot.
I was looking for an easy way to stay in touch with my brother who's in Spain, and while I can talk to him fairly inexpensively, it was always a pain to see him, his wife, and most importantly, their 3-year old daughter. I was pretty familiar with VoIP ...

Residental Packet 8
by sbnstl ,Mar 13 '05
Pros: The price is great for unlimited calls. Tech support is 24 hrs. Cons: No 911 service E911 is extra) and sound quality is very poor.
I have had Packet 8 since last Sept 04. The quality is horrible. I've called their tech support weekly to do different things to get it right, I bought a new 5.8 ghz telephone and I still have the same problems with the 2.4 ghz phone. They suggested I buy the new phone - so I spent $200 on a new cordless phone system. I still call their tech support, which is not bad as far as wait time, I always get someone within a few minutes on hold. Most techs are great to work with and I'm hoping the problems with calls dropping, sound fading in and out on calls, and calls not connecting but the other end says they can hear me. It's frustrating, so read their contract. We are stuck for a year or we get the $59 disconnect fee!!! Not worth it at all. I'll try Vonage in a few months with no contract, it is month to month. Stay clear of Packet 8 until they get it together.
