I have seen the king in Memphis, lying on his back near Cairo !

by gillandtony gillandtony is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Hotels & Travel, , May 01 '07
Pros: Avoid the hassle from vendors and touts. See almost everything in two days.
Cons: It is a whirlwind at times (or should I say a sandstorm?).
It was two o’clock in the morning. Understandably we felt disoriented and bleary eyed as we scrambled into the mini van and came face to face with two perfect strangers who were to be our travelling companions for the next few days. Our tour price ...

A city of extremes

by steerpyke , Jan 08 '06
Pros: a vibrant bustling colour full city, rich in heritage
Cons: noise, dirty and often smelly
How can I attempt to sum up the unique qualities of a city like Cairo within the confines of a short review? Well the answer is I can't, not to the degree that I would like, but if this brief snap shot gives you some idea of the glorious diversity of ...

Cleopatra would not be proud

by norwaynick , Aug 29 '01
Pros: the history (pyramids, museum,etc)
Cons: can be unsafe, a lot of poverty, very very hot in the summer
I'm sure nearly everyone in the world has learned about ancient Egypt at one point or another. Though it was never quite as powerful as the Roman or British empires it was always very interesting to all. From the mummies to the pyramids to the desert...

Pros: The Pyramids, The People, The glimpse into an ancient civilization

I love Ancient Egypt. That is what brought me to Cairo. I always wanted to see the pyramids. Cairo is an amazing city. If you have a fascination with ancient Egypt, you will find scenes in and around Cairo that are like photographs right out of your...

Cairo's Giza Plateau - On A Budget

by nmg1969 , Jun 12 '01
Pros: The Giza plateau is absolutely amazing!
Cons: The locals who want to take you for a camel ride are very annoying.
In July 2000 I was fortunate enough to be on a two night stop over in Cairo. Although I only had one day in Cairo, it turned out to be the most memorable part of a month long holiday.

My day started at 6am. Being on a tight budget I asked...

Ancient city with modern problems

by cybermaven , Nov 28 '04
Pros: inexpensive, pyramids
Cons: noisy and dirty
When you first step into the airport from the plane you get an idea of the chaos that is Cairo. There are mobs of people at the exchange places and outside offering taxi service and of course the people arriving from the flights. I had arranged ...

Pyramids of Egypt

by clairebear215 , Feb 26 '00
Pros: interesting, historical, safe
Cons: so hott in summer!

Egypt, for all its problems, remains one of the great wonders of the world. The famed Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx and other monuments of the 5,000-year-old culture are just a taxi ride from downtown Cairo.

My husband and...

Islamic Cairo

by azielinski Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, May 17 '00
Pros: We got to see more of the city, including places that most people don't see
Cons: I would have liked a couple more days in Cairo
At the end of two weeks of running around all around the Nile Valley, I spent one more day in Cairo. This was not enough. I had wanted to see the sights of Islamic Cairo and Coptic Cairo but had to choose one. A small group of us decided to see...

by bud41 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Aug 20 '01
Pros: fascinating, friendly people, economical
Cons: crowded, noisy, dirty
Take a hot, dry, dusty climate and add millions of people and cars, along with much sought-after tourist destinations and what do you have? Cairo!

If you hate noise, stay away from Cairo! If you hate people, stay away, if you hate traffic and...

Cairo in the heat of summer - ancient Cairo

by azielinski Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, May 11 '00
Pros: I got to see the pyramids and all sorts of artifacts
Cons: no other museum will ever measure up to this
I knew it was going to be hot. I was prepared for it, until the heat hits you as you walk out of the plane.

Anyhow, I was in Cairo and it was August - see my general Egypt review for the explanation - and I had to get from the airport to my...

American woman in Cairo

by pbyaeger Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Jun 07 '00
Pros: friendly people, amazing cultural sites
Cons: chaos, in shah allah, smoke, frightening driving habits
As much as its history and architecture have always
fascinated me, I never wanted to go to Cairo. Call me
bland, call me white bread--and call me concerned
when, shortly before my trip, a number of Western tourists
were killed at the...

Don't Get Ripped Off!

by kgray00 , Jul 13 '00
Pros: It's a lot of fun to shop and things can be cheap
Cons: You have to be careful about paying way to much for being an American
This may sound simple, but trust me it isn't. I lived in Cairo for a couple of months and visited other places in Egypt. There are people trying to rip you off everywhere...especially if they know you're an American.

FIRST THINGS...

Pros: A unique exhibition

Cairo - The City of the Dead

by TheSmartTraveler Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Jan 02 '00
Pros: Exotic Culture, Pyramids, Sights
Cons: Chaos, blaring car horns,
I took a tour purchased from Foreign Independent Tours out of New Jersey. We flew Egypt Air from New York's JFK International Airport to Cairo. This trip was for the first 10 days of April. I would not want to travel from May thru October because of...

The Pyramids... and an order of extra-crispy, please.

by RMetzner , Aug 25 '00
Pros: Marvels of the Ancient World
Cons: Camel Dung and Hustles Everywhere you go.
As the Sphinx gazes enigmatically into eternity, what he/she is staring at is... a Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Pizza Hut.

It's true.

So if you're planning a trip to the Great Pyramids at Giza, be prepared. The experience might not...
