Pros: The most magical city in Morocco. And that's saying something Cons: I wouldn't walk alone at night. Not again.
My SO has plenty of outstanding qualities, but unfortunately, as the saying goes in Italy,he's a typical case of "chi ha il pane, non ha i denti". He who has bread to eat, doesn't have teeth to chew. Translate that in everyday practical life with a...
Pros: Service, and Decor Cons: Finally checking out
My first night in Morocco was spent in Fes at the Hotel Sofia, in the Ville Nouvelle. Night had fallen and there was a cold wind from the nearby Riff Mountains blowing through the city. I was cold tired and dirty after my day long trip down from the ...
Pros: Quiet and traditional atmosphere Cons: Not too much nightlife if you like to party
I spent six weeks studying Arabic in Fes and traveled throughout much of Morocco. Of the main cities (Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakesh, Meknes, Tangier, and Fes), I found Fes to be the most traditional and enchanting. The town is a manageable size and the...
Pros: Souks, The Medina, leather, magnificent buildings Cons: potential for high pressure sales
I traveled to Fez in November. Fez is about 15 kilometers from the airport and is about 60 kilometers from Meknes, another imperial city. It is the oldest of the imperial cities and the capital of the first Arab dynasty of Morocco. Fez is the second...
Pros: cheap, interesting, things to do for everybody (the shopper, the partyer, the laid-back one........) Cons: "faux guides" hassling tourists in the streets. For females: guys openly flirting ALL the time
I recently spent two months in Fes, studying Arabic. The majority of my experience was in the Ville Nouvelle (New City), reminiscent of French cities. The Ville Nouvelle was designed mainly for an expanding population in a more modern city; there are...
Pros: Most exotic place I've been too Cons: Much reduced creature comforts
This was truly a memorable trip. Fez had been described to me as the best preserved medievl city, and the description was accurate. Going there was a trip back in time, and very much an eye opener.
Aggressive people and dirty town by crf214 ,Oct 16 '04
Pros: Old medina. Cons: Aggressive people, dirty streets, unpleasant odors, bad food
Traveled to Fez on my honeymoon in early October 2004. We were shocked by the aggressive sales tactics of guides and salespeople in Fez. We found the 'nouvelle ville' to be un-interesting and not very lively, by contrast the Medina was truly ancient. with some very interesting sights that reflected what one imagines the middle ages to have been like. However, all in all this was not sufficient to warm our hearts to Fez. The moroccan cuisine was lacking and consisted mainly of bland Moroccan salads and very greasily prepared other dishes. We stayed at the tourist trap par excellence: Riyad Sheherazade. The manager and staff were not helpful or welcoming at all and seemed only interested in charging our credit card. The first room we were shown - "Royal Suite" - had santiary issues. Even other rooms seemed very bare, ill lit and not very nicely decorated. There was no information on the city, the country or any sights what so ever. The staff spent much time cleaning the court yard, which continued to reek unpleasantly none the less.
