Pros: reasonably priced, clean, lots of machines, many locations Cons: no pool, not much personal attention from staff
The most common New Year’s Resolution is to get in better shape. Back in early November, I decided to get a head start on this goal by joining my local Gold’s Gym. With plenty of modern machines and a pleasant atmosphere, Gold’s is a great place ...
Pros: Provides a professional fitness training atmosphere for those serious about maintaining overall body health. Cons: A little intimidating, especially for the beginner going into fitness training.
I joined Golds Gym in the winter of 2002. I needed to get out and get on with my life after losing my husband that previous summer. Although I had exercise equipment sitting there at home inside my basement, actually a heavy-duty professional ...
Pros: Serve a specific market, lots of free weights, good staff Cons: Only for the experienced, lots of free weights, intimidating atmosphere

Gold's Gym is the largest international health and fitness center in the...
Pros: Positive atmosphere, very good equippage levels, helpful staff Cons: Some equipment needs repair/replacement
Ten years ago, Gold's Gym opened a location within a mile of my house. I was looking for a replacement for my local gym, which was adequate in terms of equipment but was a 25 minute drive. I had also visited Bally's and was quite unimpressed. I wasn't...

Pros: Largest Gym Chain, Hardcore Mentality, Diverse Offering, Variety Of Equipment Cons: Some Locations Have Limited Hours, No Workouts At Other Gyms Without A Travel Pass
I like to preface my reviews by establishing my credibility in the given field. In this case, I'll begin by mentioning that I joined the "World Gym" in Pasadena, California back in 1991 in my late teens. This same gym was bought out by Gold's about two...
Pros: A well-cared-for, reputable, attractive, stimulating, helpful, courteous work-out environment. Cons: Not cheap, must sign a year-long contract
Gold's is not a health club. It doesn't have bells & whistles like a pool, indoor track, racquetball, a day spa, etc. If that's what you're looking for, try Bally Total Fitness or Sport & Health Clubs (only in VA, MD, and Washington D.C.). Gold's ...
Pros: Lots of locations; wide selection of equipment; reasonable prices Cons: Stingy guest policy
I joined Gold’s Gym fairly recently, after I moved to Texas and accepted a position with a company that offered corporate gym memberships. My fiance and I were both growing a little soft in the middle, so I figured it couldn’t hurt us to move our rear...

The Little Man Hunts For a Gym
When I was still in high school and uncomfortable with my twiggy body, I decided that 30 pounds of muscle would be the solution to all of my problems. The way to get it? Lots of nasty weight gainers and...
Pros: Lots of equipment and a very serious workout atmosphere Cons: More for staying in shape, rather then GETTING in shape
Over the years, I've belonged to my fair share of gyms and health clubs. To me, there seem to be two distinct differences: some have overweight people as members, and others don't.
I will admit that I was a bit intimidated at first by the...
Pros: The Gym appears to be clean. Cons: Dishonest, unprofessional, like dealing with the mob.
For anyone reading, this is a repost. I encountered a glitch that was posting my review under two (nearly identical) names, which has since been fixed and is now under the correct name. However, I believe this one is important enough to re-post, if for ...
Pros: Plenty of weight lifting equipment Cons: small, cramped: not very "luxurious"

Cons: no pool; small locker room; atmosphere is maybe a bit too serious for some
I lived within a couple miles of the original Gold's in Venice, CA, for the past year. We didn't have a Gold's anywhere near where I grew up, so the Venice location was the first I ever saw. I remember thinking the place was terrifying when I walked...
I've belonged to gyms off and on for years. I think I've tried just about every gym in the area, most of which have gone out of business. Lack of membership I guess. When I no longer could deny that I needed some toning up after losing weight by dieting...

Pros: Excellent equipment, clean facility, friendly employees, comfortable atmosphere Cons: Gym can sometimes be very crowded at peak hours
When most people think of Gold’s Gym, the image of Arnold Schwarzenegger lifting gargantuan weights in a dingy, tattered facility enters the mind. You know the image. It’s most likely a black and white picture of Arnold squatting 500+ lbs. while...

When you think about Gold's Gym, you might automatically associate it with a gym full of body builders with big, rippling muscles or girls priming their tight little bodies for the next fitness competition. At least, this is what I thought about Gold's...
Pros: Full set of muscle-building equipment, lower cost, travel rights Cons: Music (rap/metal) , overselling by some franchisees, useless web site
I joined the Gold's in Mountain View, CA a year ago because 1) low price, $30/month, and 2) some of my friends go there. It proved to be a wise choice.
First, Gold's gyms are not uniform, although they have a certain "style" and...
Pros: Great equipment, knowledgeable staff, don't have to wait in line to use machines Cons: Easy to be intimidated by the buff guys
Now I had a stereotype about Gold's Gym when I arrived at the new Gold's Gym in South San Jose. I figured it was going to be a sweat soaked gym with only big muscle guys lifting, intimidating the few weaklings with every bicep curl or tricep extension. I...
Pros: friendly staff and clients, clean, great equipment Cons: no pool
I joined this chain back in 1996, having never lifted anything heavier than a 5-lb dumbbell. I was charmed off my feet and would never dream of going to any other gym. Here's why.

Pros: Great variety, inexpensive, clean and well maintained Cons: The scope of the place can be intimidating and confusing, can be a meat market at times
Gold's is to fitness what the Cornucopia was to the first Thanksgiving feast. The hard part is deciding what to do and what you want to get out of it. There's something for everyone, whether you're a seasoned bodybuilder, an aerobic fitness junkie, or...
Pros: Large and full of equipment Cons: Also full of creepy men! Staff is unhelpful and uncaring.
I had the opportunity to visit a Gold's Gym as the guest of a friend who had a membership. At the time, I was shopping around for a gym, and she told me that I should try Gold's, so that we could work out together. She said that she enjoyed going there...
Pros: Excellent equipment and cleanliness Cons: Hours too short on weekend
All gyms, even within a given franchise, have their own personality. This is true of Gold's in the Bay area. Some gyms are very hardcore and intimidating to the newbie -- others are not. In all cases, the local Gold's gyms share the benefits of a...
Pros: complete workout place with bells and whistles Cons: heavy sales pressure

Pros: Impressive free weight room, decent aerobics area, acceptable locker room. Cons: No separate overhead lifting area. No indoor track.
As a serious lifter, I am finding this gym very well-suited to my training goals (one of which is "get in, train, get out"). I work in Weymouth and live in Watertown. So the gym is more or less on my way home. At $35 a month (annual contract), I have ...

This gym isn't at all like I thought it would be or have seen advertised...a meat market! Yea, there are several big guys there, but it's not every person like the magazines make it seem. This gym has a ton of extras! A indoor heated pool, sauna, spa,...

Pros: Not expensive. Cons: Need to redo the locker room.
This review is for Gold's gym in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I was with that gym for a year in 2005. The monthly membership fee was reasonable, a bit lower than most gym's in the city. I was paying RM120 per month (approx. USD33). They charge an additional ...

Pros: excellent equipment Cons: rude staff, lying sales personnel in Northern Virginia locations run by Rapheal

Pros: Nice selection of equipment, cheap Cons: Bunker-like atmosphere, hard to opt out
Gold's Gym in Somerville, MA is inexpensive and has a good selection of equipment and classes. It doesn't get crowded, and you never have to wait to get on a treadmill or stairmaster. A downside is the condition of the facility, which doesn't have any ...
Pros: Newer gyms attractive; many machines; gyms are numerous and easy to find. Cons: Promises cannot be relied on; read contract carefully. Business practices illegal and certainly unethical.
This well-marketed gym hides a number of huge flaws. Do your research carefully before signing up. The appealing facade masks mind-numbingly complex contracts, a lawsuit-happy corporate parent and it is virtually impossible to escape them once you sign ...
Pros: You can cancel...with effort...and time...and by donating extra money to their cause Cons: Extremely onerous cancellation policies...seemingly designed to make canceling difficult
I was a month-to-month member of a Golds Gym in Northern Virginia for several years. They did everything in their power to help me join...and made the process quick and easy on-site. I called recently to determine how to cancel my membership since I was ...

I first came to Gold's Gym at a real low time in my life. I was tired, out of shape and needed to lose some pounds. I was greeted by several friendly staff, and they treated me like an old friend. I signed up, at first, for 3 months. But it was just the...
I heard the advertisement on the radio about a FREE 30 day trial membership to Gold's Gym. That's great, I thought, I'll go see what Gold's has to offer and maybe join at the end of the trial membership. I called the nearest Gold's and made an...

Pros: Good bodybuilding trainers, decent cost, good equipment Cons: Only for the serious bodybuilder
I joined Gold's Gym a few years ago and I have to say, it is not a gym for the normal human being. Gold's Gym started off as a muscle-bound bodybuilding shop and that has not changed. This, however, was not known to me when I joined.
Pros: Variety of fitness classes Cons: Filthy and falling apart
I joined the Somers Point, NJ, Gold's Gym in Nov. of '99. I did it as a favor to a friend (her sister did not want to be a member any longer so I took over her membership). They are pretty good about keeping the equipment in good working condition but...

Pros: Serious athmosphere, excellent equipment Cons: Sometimes grumpy staff
There are two kinds of gyms:
1. The trendy feel-good gym with pink coating on the dumbbells, 2456346 spinning/aerobics/yoga classes per day, and 46 machines for butt training (with one single squat rack). Or the other kind:

Pros: A lot of metal, less toys Cons: business driven rather educating
Gold's of Chantilly in Northern VA, USA was never meant to be a Social Club, like many other "Fitness Centers". Gold's started and still keeps the heavy metal as its baseline. You WANT to lift weights? You go to Gold's! You want to play in the...
Pros: Facilities and staff are terrific Cons: Cost to much
I use to have a membership to Gold's Gym in Florida a few years ago. My main purpose to join was to tone and also maintain my weight and figure. I must admit that the staff was helpful with teaching me different techniques. The facilities were in top...

Pros: A serious atmosphere dedicated to hardcore, committed fitness Cons: leaning more toward the mainstream lately
This gym rules. Plain and simple. And I'm not a bodybuilder. Ever since I started training at the gym, Gold's has been my destination of choice. I've tried a few other clubs, like The Right Stuff and Ronnie Lott's Fitness Center in San Jose. None of...

Let me run through the story, from the begining;

Pros: Can be cheap (depends if you know how to bargain) Cons: Dirty, do not maintain properly
I have been a member for more then 1 year in the Gold's Gym in Bellevue, WA and I came to one conclusion. This conclusion is that the gym is not careful in keeping equipment in top shape, bathrooms clean, changing rooms clean.
I joined at the Gold's Gym here in Paducah with a friend of mine. I mainly walked on the treadmill and worked the weights a little bit. The first thing about Gold's that ticked me off was that they lost my ID that I left at the counter when I first went...
Pros: Amazing aerobics instructors, aerobics class variety Cons: Cost, not enough weight machines, college crowd

Pros: Great free weight selection Cons: None, really; it is what it is.

Pros: Well equipped and clean. Cons: Unethical membership practices.

I joined Gold's Gym in Canton, GA, which was 5 miles from my house and was told that I could cancel my membership if I moved more than 50 miles away. I got divorced and I did move 50 miles away -- actually 200 miles away. I called the director and told ...

Pros: Nice equipment, clean environment, variety of machines/weights Cons: Unfriendly/unhelpful staff, no group classes anymore, unethical business practices (in my opinion)

Pros: clean facility, plenty of equipment Cons: Everything! - Customer service, faulty equipment, poorly educated trainers, overpriced gear and protein shakes

Pros: Machines, people and motivation! Cons: Real serious people
It's a wonderful place to workout and if you are serious. Not a place to meet other people - people look so unfriendly. No jacuzzi or sauna. The machines are well kept. They do play a variety of music now.
Pros: plenty of equipment to work out on. Cons: poor customer service, and shady business practices.

Pros: Good variety of exercise machines, there are classes.
Cons: Deceptive practices, horrible lying managers, bad customer service, rude employees, bad cancellation policy (auto renewal?)

COLUMBIA GOLD'S CARES!!! by cronchetto ,Jul 09 '05
Pros: Helpful staff, lots of variety in machines and weights, fun classes with knowledgeable instructors. Cons: This is no fancy shmacy "healthclub". This is a real place to get really fit!
When I started going to Gold's in 1998, I knew I had to have a contract or it would be too easy to quit. I was nearing the 200 pound mark but didn't feel embarrassed because the staff really made me feel welcome, always cheerful and willing to answer any questions about the equipment. The classes were tailored to all levels of students. I tried them all and now I love spinning, Yoga, kickboxing and bodypump. I lost 70 pounds and became an Adventure Racer, traveling all over the world to loads of of different races. Thanks to Gold's, they helped to change my life!
Pros: It was a fine gym to work out in. Cons: Kept putting in new equipment so it was getting crowded.
...see review.
Signed a contract for two years at the gym in West Valley City, UT. After moving across town four years later, I tried to cancel my membership. I was told over the phone I needed to come into the gym and fill out a form. After making a special trip, I was informed by the desk clerk there was a $50 cancellation fee. She wouldn't accept my form without the money and the boss wasn't in. After straightening out the problem over the phone, I had to drive back in to fill out the form (they didn't try to extort the $50 this time). After about six months they started to take monthly payments out of my checking account again. They don't refund the money promptly, needing to go through their 'records'. They won't give me the cash out of the till and call it even. The gym was fine but their financial practices have been a huge pain in the butt.
Excellent Gym: Management Willing to Explain Policies by noledu1914 ,Oct 05 '06
Pros: Great equipment, clean, orderly, well-trained personnel, clean locker rooms and showers. Very good gym. Cons: None.
Excellent gym!
I recently posted a mixed review here. The gym is excellent (see Pros below); however, I had an issue with a banking matter when I had to suddenly quit my membership. That issue provoked a poor review posted here by me. However, the owner of the local gym telephoned me and reasonably explained matters and then went as far as offering an ideal resolution to the problem I had with Gold's Gym. In fact, his resolution was so generous and reasonable that I decided immediately to change my opinion and give Gold's Gym in Marlborough, Massachusetts on Maple Street the highest rating.
Thank you for setting matters straight immediately.
DC Gold's Gym. Good Gym. Horrible Customer Service. by moosenlawyer ,Jul 15 '05
Pros: Good gym. No frills. Cons: Horrible customer service/back office support.
Belong to Gold's Gym in DC metro area.
The gym facilities are good. Good place to workout with no frills...but the customer service sucks.
I've had to pay late fees twice when I put in a change of credit card form for the automatic renewal on my membership due to lost credit cards when traveling for work. Despite the fact that the forms were mailed to the regional corporate office AND dropped off at the gym's front desk, they still either get lost and never received, or my file is updated two or even THREE weeks late. Gym's employees are apologetic but not enough to waive the $20 fee because it took them two weeks to update my file. And forget about talking to a human being when you call their regional office. I hope you like non-returned voicemail.
Pros: DON'T USE CAPITOL HILL GYM Cons: Great equipment
Canceled membership in Oct. 2003, basically a month to month as contract for a year expired. Signed forms and was told had to wait a month to begin new discounted membership. Thing was I joined another gym under a temp. six-month membership. I phoned Gold's after the six month membership was over to find if discounted rate still applied and was told I owed money for the six months I was gone! I did not visit the gym during this time and have filed a complaint with the BBB. Their practices after canceling are very deceptive. I received no bill and assumed the membership was cancelled.
Pros: Great Staff. Lots of equipment. Cons: Sometimes crowded.
I love Gold's Gym. Maybe it's because I go pretty much everyday and have seen the results first hand, or maybe it's because the environment is welcoming, clean, and flexible. The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. They are knowledgeable about the equipment and how to use it, and will show you free of charge. They also offer personal training sessions for free. Gotta love free stuff! They are open late and early, even though I can't get up earlier enough or stay up late enough to go at those times. Sometimes they could use some more cardio machines...like right after work when everyone is there. They have a great pro shop with a variety of items, plus a juice bar with healthy and tasty snacks. Every gym has its share of muscle heads, but there are just as many average/normal people that attend.
Golds gym is a rip off and flat out sucks.. by ihategolds ,Oct 17 '05
Pros: There are no pros, none, cant think of one. Cons: Poor management, unhelpful customer service.
Be very careful signing a contract with Golds. Unless you know you can stay there for the duration. The one in Spokane on 57th has poor management, turnover is high so its no wonder they cant get anyone there with any competence. I made sure to sign up for a month to month contract.. yeah good luck getting it canceled. BEWARE!!!
Pros: - They are everywhere, I don't understand why. Cons: Nearly impossible getting out of the contract, the staff is unsympathetic.
I need to be fair. If you enjoy paying lots of money to use run-down equipment then Gold's Gym is perfect for you.
If you want to give it a fair shot, don't. The best word I can think of to describe these guys is "slimeballs."
My wife and I fell for the trick. Please don't do the same.
Remember that when you sign that contract you are not signing a monthly membership. You are agreeing to the $$/month TIMES the leangth of the contract. That is what you are paying. Then, you set up a payment plan for that huge payment. So, 2 years at $49 means you promise to pay 1,176. Also, you must be vigilant to be sure the agreement doesn't auto-renew. If you want to cancel - stay alert.
Gold's Gym Amherst (MA) is better than the rest by scicte ,Feb 09 '06
Pros: clean, well organized, friendly older staff, cardio, free weights, women's gym, child care, saunas Cons: not open 24 hours!
I've read a lot of slander and bad press about Gold's but I have to say that I've been a member of the Amherst, MA gym now since '04 and I think it's the best Gym in the Pioneer Valley (clean, well organized, and staffed by friendly professionals in their 30s and 40s).
DO NOT SIGN THEIR CONTRACT by happydude101 ,Dec 26 '03
Pros: just another gym Cons: Unfair extorting bastards
I signed up in January of 2001, at Golds in Deerfield Beach FL. I used the auto-pay credit card feature (another clause with teeth). I paid every month for the entire year. 17 days before signup anniversary, I called to cancel (due to relocation). That wasn't acceptable, because they insisted I wait in line at the post office to send a registered letter. They wrote back, that cancellations in writing are due 30 days before anniversary. But they would be happy to take another $200 to cancel their contract. I canceled my credit card. No word for all of 2003. Then on 12/26/03 (yes Virginia, after Xmas!) A collection company is seeking $565 for one Gold's Gym.
This legalized extortion. Do not give these scumbags any of your money. I wish them nothing but bad things, because they could give a crap less about good customer service, and treating people with any degree of fairness. I hope they burn in hell.
Avoid Renton, WA Gold's Gym by gymgoer ,Jul 05 '05
Pros: Wide variety of equipment. Cons: Poorly run establishment overall.
I have been a gym goer for approximately 12 years now and never had I had a poorer experience than I have had in the last year and a half at the Gold's Gym in Renton, Washington. Customer service is non-existent at all levels from ownership to management on down the personnel chain. In addition, prioritizing their budget is clearly not among their concerns. They spend a (seemingly) ridiculous amount of money on things such as Barbeques (in the parking lot), "80s dress up day" and Gold's Gym drinking nights at various local bars while meanwhile equipment, both cardio and strength training, goes un-repaired and unusable for months on end. They also close completely on numerous holidays including Easter, New Year's Day and the Fourth of July. I suggested that they open limited hours, but was met with rudeness from the manager by the name of Van. Terrible experience. I can not emphasize enough that membership at this gym is an extremely unwise investment.
I joined Gold's Gym in Buford, GA beginning of 2003. As I was about to sign up, I asked the clerk, J., what it will cost to cancel the contract and he told me that it was merely $50.00, no strings attached.
Well, I decided to cancel the contract later that year only to find out, that canceling the contract would cost me approx. $281.
Gold's Gym West 50's Columbus Circle NYC by flight115 ,Dec 27 '06
Pros: clean, friendly staff, well-run Cons: cost? but, then again, i am a cheap-o ;)
I joined this gym when it was newly opened in the NYC area. Location was a big factor for me. So, while I was doing my comparison shopping, I took their tour.
The tour was thorough, and though the gym is not large, they layout is very efficient. Cycle rooms and studios are tucked away in unobtrusive places, with class offerings that range from yoga to boxing to hip-hop dance.
The locker rooms are clean, equipped with showers, steam, and sauna. Locker rentals are available, which I took advantage of, along with the complimentary laundry service. Towel service is a daily offering and the towels were always pristine, with their laundry machines on-site.
The machines were very well maintained, and their free weight selection is pretty large for a NYC urban health club. Gold's gym has done very well in transitioning to a fitness club as opposed to their previous reputation for being a weight room.
Body builders and urban fitness white-collars can both find a place here.
If a company has ever forgotten why they are in business, it is GOLDS GYM. While the gyms look nice and clean, the blood running through this dragon is cold. Customer service is beyond horrible, there are hidden fees for every thing you do, they make every attempt possible to make you feel uncomfortable, they take advantage of those who do work out there by trying to sell them over priced fitness gear (clothing) and rip-off rates on all fitness shakes (protein shakes, etc).
I have been a member at several clubs over the past decade and GOLDS GYM is BY FAR the worse I've ever used. It's not the equipment, it's the company and their ethics. I've tried to be forgiving ... but they continue to burn me time and time again ... and for that reason I've taken the time to write my FIRST ever EPINION -- in hopes of keeping you out of their claws.
Pros: staff, facilities, hours of service Cons: no child center
My time with Gold's Gym has been great. The facility and equipment are fantastic as well as hi-tech. Their staff is very friendly and are willing to help you with any of your questions. The workout environment is really great, not to packed or small.
Pros: Great atmosphere if you pick the right Gold's Cons: Some Gold's have slim offerings; don't get caught up in the hype.
Others have reviewed how they've lost weight and other miracles that'll get you to read the review; but here's the real deal.
I travel quite a bit around the U.S. I've seen 5 different Gold's gyms from 4 states. Arizona, California, Illinois, and Florida.
There is not 1 single standard other than the "Gold's Name" that any of these gym's have had in common.
2 of them had pools
2 of them had raquet ball courts
3 of them had no pools and raquet ball courts
1 had a basket ball court.
1 had a hardcore lifting atmosphere
4 of them had classes for tae kwon doe; spinning; etc.
If I can offer the reader anything; it would be to carefully take a look at all the offerings and make sure it is exactly what you're looking for in a gym. The only thing Gold's seems to mandate at their franchised gyms is the license to sell their clothing line.
Golds gym Braintree 12/6/2005 by gidggirl ,Dec 07 '05
Pros: members are friendly Cons: daycare manager sucks. front desk staff is unprofessional.
stay away from golds gym if you have children. the daycare needs to be shut down. the management is careless and unprofessional. the manager does not watch out for the children, she is too busy playing he said she said games with the teenage desk staff. do not join this gym. people do not stay here.
Not satisfied with this company by mdoherty3 ,Nov 10 '06
Pros: There's parking. Cons: Their pricing scheme is a con for sure!
Gold's gym is a franchise so the experience will vary according to where you go but my husband and I were very dissatisfied with the service and the atmosphere at the Gold's Gym in Somerville, MA. In comparison to the gym we use now, I would give it a negative rating if I could. Plus, they continued to charge me after I had already sent in a cancellation request, they claimed they never got it. In my opinion, it's a complete waste of money, pay a little more and go to Bally's or BSC.
I moved and found out I had to cancel my gym membership. I found out the membership does NOT transfer to other Gold's Gyms. I sent in my information they requested along with the $50 fee for cancellations. I then received a letter telling me the FINAL payment that would be withdrawn from my account would occur on 3/10/07. After I paid it, I closed the account. Now they tried to take out a payment in April and are threatening me with other charges for closing the account! They say the account is not closed and will continue to withdraw money from my current accounts monthly! I had no problems with the gym until I needed to cancel. Many others have similar complaints. They are a money-hungry scam. Apparently, they have a company that does the billing for them and the two don't communicate well.
Beware Golds Gym Frederick Maryland, hazardous by honestopinion1 ,Sep 08 '05
Pros: ummmm..... Cons: They are not obligated to maintain or supervise ANYTHING to ensure patrons safety.
READ ENTIRE CONTRACT, FRONT AND BACK. It releases them from any liability "for injury that occurs from their negligence", including machines falling on you, machines malfunctioning causing injury, their negligent instruction or supervison, even lockers that can become detached from the wall causing neck and back injuries. If a cable breaks and weights fall on your head. They are not liable. Read you contract!!! Nothing that they do can ever be held against them. This means they do not have to properly maintain anything or properly supervise anything. Basically your paying for hazardous conditions.
Golds has average equipment, average staff, and good operating hours(24/7) where i live.
The biggest problem is their membership department, will try to get you to sign a 2 year "agreement" that its nearly impossible to get out of, even after the 2 year period. Should you try, its still likely they will forward some large bogus amount to a collection agency for as much as 2 years of future services u cant use and will still be billed for(1000$-2000$).
Hard sell at Gold's Gym in Medford, MA by julikell ,Dec 27 '06
Pros: n/a Cons: Hard sell. Stay away unless you've already decided to join.
Just wanted to warn people about the new Gold's Gym in Medford, MA (between the Meadow Glen Mall and Wellington Circle.
Hard sell defined. When the young lady couldn't get me to buy a membership, she brought in the "membership supervisor." He wasn't going to quit until I signed. I literally had to walk out.
Whenever a second person joins the mix -- get up and walk out!
Pros: none Cons: misrepresenting contract, poor customer service
As a federal employee I was told that I could cancel at any time. I used the gym twice and found it noisy and dirty with broken equipment and not enough floor space to stretch. I tried to cancel 2 weeks into the contract and was told I can't. They put me through to a supervisor who would not listen and then left me on hold for 20 minutes when I asked to speak to someone higher up. So much for their honesty and customer service. There are numerous websites with tales such as mine from many others. Once they start billing you they WILL NOT STOP.
Careful of the Redmond Branch. by speak2joe ,Feb 12 '07
Pros: Very nice exercise equipment Cons: Spa hot tub, and sauna often are malfunctioning
While this Gym is likely a reasonable choice for anyone looking to join a health club. I would just like to reccomend that anyone considering Joining the REdmond Gold's gym take into account that the spa, hot tub, and sauna facilitties have often proven themselves to be prone to malfunction, and even dangerous (there have been several very serious chemical mishaps.) I was told that the spa chemicals are computer controlled and that these computers are prone to frightening glitches.
I called in to get a price quote for their membership. The person that I spoke with was rude and refused to give me a number, insisting that I had to come down to the gym to get that information. Even after I explained to him that he was going to lose a sale if he refused to give me the amount, whereas he would possible gain one if he just told me the numbers, he wouldn't budge. I tried to explain to him that I was on crutches from a sprained ankle, and he still would not be of any assistance. I will spend twice as much at one of the gyms that were helpful and friendly before I go to this place. Their refusal to drop the tough sell just cut their profits.
Love it! Best Gym I've Been To (Boise, ID) by adreayoung ,Apr 26 '06
Pros: Friendly, Clean, Women's Only area, Indiviual TV's, lots of treadmills and ellipitcals Cons: gets crowded after work, traffic getting there
I decided to join Gold's a few months after I moved to Boise, prior to moving I was with 24 hour fitness back home. They had just recently closed the 24 hour fitnesses in Boise. But I go to the Meridian and the Park Center one and it's the best gyms ever! Both have indiviual tvs on the treadmill and elliptical so you can watch your own choice of tv shows and not what the staff wants you to watch. I usually go sometime between 4p-5p to the Meridian one and it's less crowded then the Park Center one. I had signed a 3 year contract (they're new contracts) and really enjoy it. It's my time to get away from the stresses of work, internship, and class. and they're both 3 levels and both offer tanning at an additional price but it's all right there. Everyone is really friendly and they have great classes you can walk into. I really enjoy the core class- I never had a 1/2 hour go by any faster then I did when I was in the class.
But I go 3-5 times a week and love it! :)
Worst Customer Service Ever by bugfriend ,Jun 21 '06
Pros: Individual gyms vary, but most are well maintained. Cons: Worst customer service I have ever received.
The Gold's Gym Customer Service Center should be renamed because they offer absolutely no service whatsoever. I am trying to cancel my membership because I recently moved, and I have been on hold for over 2 hours with no end in sight.
They obviously do not care for their customers, and there is no way to get to an operator or even a real human being.
Pros: Managed to eventually cancel the contract Cons: Mismanaged and inexperienced staff in billing department
This must be my worst experience with a billing department ever. The company had my credit card and deducted the monthly amounts. However with all the proof of payment they still handed me over for collection. When I contacted the billing department they acknowledged that payments were up to date and could not give an answer why I was in collection.
I actually had a contract with World Gym. However they closed down and Golds Gym took over the contract. I am not sure if this was actually legal, however with just a few months left I let it slip.
Be very wary of this company, read the small print and don't let the sales staff win you over with false promises.
Beachwood, OHIO Golds Gym---RIPOFF by mattk008 ,Nov 20 '07
Pros: A new gym Cons: Arrogant salespeople, ridiculous prices for the location
They are charging a ridiculous amount for this newly built Golds Gym and are very arrogant. They act like they are in New York city however they are in one of the poorest cities in the country in Cleveland, Ohio. This Golds Gym will be out of business within 5 years because they will not be able to survive in this location charging a 199 initiation fee and 80 dollars a month. That is a complete joke! Now obviously there are people living in Beachwood, Ohio that would have no problem paying that (very few would though, even the filthy rich) but I guarantee you they will not be able to survive in this location unless they drop their prices considerably. You can go to Ballys or 24 hour fitness and pay 20 dollars a month for basically the same thing--a gym to workout at. Definitely not worth it but if you have money to throw away and feel secure they will survive then by all means throw your money away to these crooks.
Gold's Gym is a franchise by autopoesis ,Sep 13 '07
Pros: if you are a gay male and craving sex...simply enter the men's locker room Cons: Their a corporation... 'nuff said
for everyone that loves Golds gym so much...try to cancel...
see how "easy" it
I think the franchisees that run the Gold's in my state don't maintain their equipment well... the locker room is sour smelling... I never went in their...couldn't get near the entrance and breathe still... I was so disappointed by these two things alone that I canceled my membership...so I thought... until weeks rolled by and my checking got billed for the next month ...I immediately contacted customer service ...let me rephrase... I tried to contact Gold's Gym customer service... I was unable to... I closed my bank account to stop the withdrawals... and then never heard from them...thought they got the hint and fixed their issue internally... we can only be so optimistic...now this one visit to the gym is costing me well over $600 and a lot of time researching Executive contact information for all parties involved...and then making contacts with all of them...
I refuse to pay over $600 to use the poorly maintained equipment in the gay mans meat market [refuse to call it a workout facility]
Overcharged with Automatic Draft by courtney1009 ,Jun 04 '07
Pros: Great Space, Great Machines Cons: Customer Service, Overcharged
Nice gym, but considerably overpriced for the area. I thought I would try it out and I did for a year. Since, I only signed a 1 year contract I did not think I needed to cancel my membership. They have continued to draft money out of my account, since I did not give written notice of cancellation. This is after that automatically renewed my contract. So overall great workout, POOR customer service.
Golds Contracts-"Thieves, Liars, and Scoundrels" by rrp49 ,Sep 01 '05
Pros: Decent equipment Cons: Terrible customer service and lousy commitment to contract.
Paid up front for a membership which included a $99.00 per year for life membership at Spokane WA Gold Gym. Now when it comes time to renew Spokane gym owner won't honor their lifetime commitment will only provide a extra year at $99.00. Membership personnel won't return calls during normal hours unreasonable to speak with. STAY AWAY FROM THEIR CONTRACTS.
Pros: none. Cons: Nothing is "gold" about this gym, just the opposite!
I would believe the negative comments before buying into those self-promoted reviews here.
My personal experience at Gold Gym compels me to warn others. The salespeople are sleazy at best. They never give you a straight answer, but rather yank you around to juice you dry. The bottom line is Gold Gym would drain your pocket. And that's how they "change your life" (a slogan Gold Gym uses: "how can we change your life today").
The equipment are not well-maintained. The locker room is filthy. The staff are unhelpful. And most important of all, you get too little for your money.
To stay fit, just take a 3-mile walk in the park 3 times a week. It's free!
Pros: Large (if dirty and poorly maintained) gym Cons: See above, too many cons to list in 15 words.
The standards of cleanliness at this Gym are sorely lacking. The staff have a bad attitude and goof off on the internet, huddled in one office much of the day. After I had finally had enough and cancelled, they charged me for an extra month. I signed at a nearby (slightly smaller, but well kept and friendly) gym for 40% of the price Gold's had been charging me. If this company was publicly traded they would have folded a long time ago. Don't let the positive, planted reviews fool you, avoid this gym at all costs.
Beware Gold's Gym Membership: Carbondale by ylimrev ,Sep 16 '07
Pros: has equipments that any other gym has Cons: rip off fees---big time!!
Appalling cancellation fees!!!
Never...never...sign up for membership!! On the contract, the very fine prints are very misleading. If you read it, if sounds like you can cancel anytime for valid reasons (like health reasons or if you're relocating) without difficulty!----NOPE!!! It actually means...and i found this out after---Gold's Gym membership actually means you can cancell only after paying them $200 dollars!!
For whatever reasons---YOU HAVE TO PAY $200 TO CANCEL! --yes even if you'll die if you exercise or the nearest Gold's gym is 100 miles away---YOU HAVE TO PAY!...what a rip off...and if its about cancellation?...you'll find the most unhelpful staff there is..They're gonna pass you around!!
Beware people! your better off going to other Gym..believe me!!
Pros: Cheap and convenient. Cons: Predatory billing practices.
Gold's is a pretty good gym as far as gyms go. I signed up for a year informing the sales person that I was moving and would not need the membership for longer than that. The year goes up and I see this charge for $80 on my Mastercard from this company called ABC Financial. They are the crafty outfit that does Gold's bidding. They reinstituted a brand new billing cycle saying it was in my contract. Mind you, I no longer have clearance to use the gym but I'm still being charged?? I insisted they cancel but they refused. They make it as difficult as possible for you to cancel. You have to send them a certified letter saying you want to cancel and then they will stop billing you 30 days after the 1st of the next month after they receive the letter. I changed my Mastercard number, the only way I knew how to slap their greedy hands away from my money. I've filed a complaint with the Attorney General's office. BEWARE!!!
Checking account nightmares by justhanginout3 ,Jul 20 '06
Pros: Faciltiy Cons: Ethics, Billing
I love the facility, the people are friendly BUT (big but) they charge your checking account any amount they want, for any reason, and will never issue a refund.
They owe me almost $300. I have spoken to several other people who have similiar stories, they continue to bill after memberships are cancelled, they charge for services never provided.
Gold's Gym Provo Uses Deceptive Business Practices by goldsprovosux ,Jan 18 '08
Pros: Close to my home Cons: dishonest, insufficient equipment, crowded, poorly managed
I paid a 3 year contract in full. I asked point blank if any additional fees would be assessed. I was told no. Today I received a bill for a semi-annual Facility Improvement Fee for $15. The contract discloses the fee, but I was told there were no fees. I should have read more clearly. The sales rep should have been more honest. He apologized but did not offer any resolution.
Gold's Day care is terrible! by rdkens ,Oct 03 '04
Pros: There is nothing positive about Gold's Gym Day Care! Cons: Unsafe, unsanitary day care; terrible management
Mothers, don't leave your child at Gold's Gym day care. It is unsafe and unsanitary and the management will blow you off if you have a problem with it b/c they already have your money.
Fraudulent charges to credit card by winton ,Nov 22 '03
Pros: Good locations. Cons: Unethical business practices.
Gold's Gym charged several months of dues, about $160, to a credit card that was never authorized for their use. I have written two letters and made numerous phone calls attempting to obtain a refund but I receive no response. If we had used the gym during this period I wouldn't make an issue of it but we weren't even there! Be very careful in using a credit card at Gold's Gym. Check your credit card statement carefully each month to see what has been charged. Gold's Gym has proven to me that they can't be trusted.
Dirty and Cancellation process is AWFUL by pinkers26 ,Jul 10 '09
Pros: locations Cons: Dirty, old, cancellation procedure, pool was constantly broken
Okay overall except that the women's only room was old and dirty - equipment definitely needed updated. The pool was constantly out of use. Also - make sure you understand that you have to send a CERTIFIED letter to Arkansas to cancel your membership with 30 DAYS NOTICE. What a rip off!!!
Pros: I can not think of any. Cons: The staff is lazy, and rude
Gold's gym will not survive with the competition of good customer service at the other gyms vs. poor C/S at gold's gym. I almost changed gyms from Raquetball and Fitness to Gold's because gold's was less than a mile away from my new home...but quickly changed my mind after going in for a "free" trial and not staying to use it. The customer service is horrid. My advice to the people working at jobs they don't like, get another job or don't work in a job where you have to talk to people. Even after I complained, no one cared. Go to another gym, it's worth it not to be treated like you are bothering someone.
Happy so far! Got a great deal! by lizb1979 ,Nov 23 '09
Pros: equipment & service Cons: sign up
I just recently joined Golds with a limited time special. I am very happy thus far with the service, equipment & facility in general. I would like to note that after the initial sign up process, it is quite a pleasant experience. If you would like to avoid the haggle side of things, I would be happy to help. Send me an email for info: trafficofdesire at hotmail dot com.
Pros: They do have good equipment and lots of it. Cons: Do not get into a contract with Gold's Gym!
The Gold's Gym in Florissant, MO is very crowded. You have people gathering around the weights or equipment. If you have worked out or certainly working out the classes are very easy. If you like to dance then I would say take the classes or stay at home and dance. The Womens Locker room is disgusting. Especially after people take a shower and are dripping walking to their locker. Their biggest sell is a personal trainer and if you can afford one I would say go for it. There is no one around to help you when you need help with a piece of equipment and they do not even try to get to know you. I have tried to talk to trainers and that is a joke.
Pros: It was a very nice gym & had everything from exercise to tanning. Cons: Membership's don't last & very poor service. You better enjoy figuring it all out yourself...
I live in Anderso,SC & baught a lifetime membership with Gold's Gym. I paid alot of money for this & this facility closed within 2yrs. Few years later another opens so I thought great,I can go workout again.. I was wrong, they told me my membership was no good & that I had to rejoin & pay, how upset do you think I was!!! I threw my card away & walked out... Again, this facility closed within a few years & another one opens a few years later.... To me this is a rip off & it should not matter if one closes or reopens, memberships should be honored & when they close they should be made to refund what we paid for but can no longer receive... I would never recomend joining at Gold's Gym... The only good service you receive is when they are trying to sign you up & when you do decide to join & paperwork is done, their threw with you then & they don't care if you get upset because after that it's your choice to keep comeing back or not. They have their money so they could care less whether you did or not.
Do Not Join Gold's Gym!! by jazz3625tonic ,Dec 21 '08
Pros: It's a place your go to work out. Cons: You will never be able to cancel... even after you fulfill your contract period!
You will never be able to get out of their contract. Your Credit Card will be charged until you cancel the Credit Card! Then they still will not cancel the contract. They will let it go on for awhile and then sell the contract to a collection firm and wreck your credit. This is for real believe me!
Please don’t use this gym by freedom2009 ,Aug 03 '09
Pros: None Cons: Junk old iron machines.
Please don’t use this gym. Worst management Lot of chemical usage Dusty floors Vibrating fans Lot of noise Unfriendly instructors
Instructors have certificates, they don’t have commonsense. Instructor asked me to do exercise even without warm up or warm down. They are busy with their iPhones. They use timer. The moment 45 minutes is over; they won’t speak a single word. Just say see you next week. Every body is worried about their money, not about people who is paying it.
Pros: -Convenience Cons: -billing affecting my credit (when I PAID them!) -old equipment -unkept/unclean -lack of assistance -short weekend hours
I have personally worked at two gyms myself: a small business as well as a Corporate gym. I am also an avid gym goer, former college athlete. Never in my life have I experienced such incompetance. The billing in particular is absolutely horrendous. I have paid every month, with statements to prove it, and out of nowhere, Golds gym reports my info to a collections agency. I am now in a battle that a lot of my friends are in w/ Golds Gym (as their facilities are unkept anyhow). This is a time I wish I were an attorney. They need to be out of business with such unorganization and lack of professionalism.
GOLD GYM-Fradulent Business-False promises by ecom99 ,Mar 19 '09
Pros: Do nt join Cons: Do nt join any more-RISK of losing money
Do not join this GYM .I joined at Valley Ranch,Irving Location. Its useless they promise every thing and after joing you can not cancel any thing.Do not give credit cards. You may be in risk losing money as well as your credit score..
Pros: Any pros are outweighed by the bad Cons: Continue to charge you long after you have cancelled plan
I had a friend on a shared plan with me. I paid my friends dues by direct deposit on my debit card. I called to cancel my friends dues after he stoppped paying me and Golds gym told me that they took care of it. Three months later I'm still being charged $80.00 a month.
Pros: Nice, new facility with lots of equipment. Cons: Staff are more concerned with selling new memberships than with taking care of customers.
I would strongly advise anyone against becoming a member of Gold's Gym. Their focus is on making as much money out of you as possible and they do not care about you or your fitness goals. Classes are routinely cancelled, equipment is often broken and not repaired, the staff is unprofessional and unqualified. Without doubt one of the worst gyms I have ever been a member of.
Why is everyone so rude in this gym by sfhiphopdancer ,Feb 20 '09
Pros: Looks nice. Cons: Rude people and ridiculous cancellation policy for personal training.
The Gold's Gym in my area has pretty decent equipment and looks nice, but most employees are just so rude there - from the manager to receptionist. I am not sure why people have so much attitude there. They also have a 24 hour cancellation policy with no exception if you are looking for a personal trainier. So be careful before you sign up for a training. If you get sick or get an emergency within 24 hours before your scheduled personal training, they will still charge you even if you call them and try to re-schedule your personal training session. Basically they don't care about your health, what they care is only your money.
GOLD GYM GUYS ARE BIG CHEATERS. BE CAREFUL. THEY WILL PROMISE THAT YOU CAN TERMINATE THE CONTRACT ANYTIME ETC ETC AND THEN THEY WILL HARASS YOU WHILE CANCELLING THE CONTRACT. THEY WILL KEEP CHARGING AND CHARGING YOUR CREDIT CARD. THEY ARE A BIG FRAUD!!!
Avoid this gym at all costs. by yorkster007 ,Jul 17 '07
Pros: None. Cons: Terrible Business practices, lust for money, bad environment in general.
Golds Gym is run by sleazy people who only want your money and trick you into signing contracts that force you to pay them when you don't want to. I signed up before spring break so I could get into shape and told them that I would soon be going to college where they offer a free gym, so I made sure they knew I was only going to be there short term. They said that was fine and I could cancel whenever I needed too. Of course that was not the case. Now I need a doctors note or proof that Im moving more than twenty miles away in order to cancel my membership. The people who own golds gym are criminals, and you MUST be sure to avoid them like the plague.
When you want to cancel the contract with them the 30 day notice is a joke. They will still charge you for 2 more months. That is even if you've already paid the last month of your contract. You can not believe their explanation: they reserve the right to charge you during the notice period and just because you've already paid the last month of the contract it does not mean anything to them. They will "generously" allow you to use the gym for 2 more months even if you want to terminate the contract after 30 days of notice. It is unbelievable how they can get away with that. We will talk to a lawyer!!!!!!!
Pros: Clean facility and convenient location Cons: They make it impossible to cancel and keep billing you for months!!!
I have held gym memberships continuously for over 20 years. I have never experienced the kind of deceptive business practices, that occured with Gold's Gym Orlando Area, when I tried to cancel (to move 140 miles, where they have no affiliated locations). They are a well oiled criminal enterprise with very creative ways of skirting the law. In summary, they will make it nearly impossible to cancel a membership in 30 days or less. It typically takes 3-4 months to finally close up your account, and stop taking your money. If you block them from taking your money, they just sell the false debt to "collections", and now your credit rating is hurt! No matter how convenient the location, or how nice the equipment, NEVER sign a contract with Gold's. They have a billing partner called ABC Financial, and they will keep taking your money, and assessing late fee's, claiming you didn't follow the contract properly to cancel your membership. I can't believe this hasn't been more publicized, because it is so blantiently criminal, and happens all over the country.
They filed a lawsuit against me, and told me if I settled they would re-instate my membership. They were so easy to get a hold of when I made my payments. After I have paid them, it's hard getting in touch and when I did, they told me they couldn't reinstate it.
Gold's Gym in Lessburg, VA is NOT typical GOLD'S by verizayan ,Nov 03 '08
Pros: Never very crowded Cons: New General Manager has run down the quality stds
Having lived in 9 cities over the past 20 years, I thought all Gold's Gyms met the same standards. Unfortunately this one would be better named "Elmos' Discount Exercise"--- The showers and locker room are filthy and equipment is broken, although they always seem to have someone (who speaks no English) running a vacuum cleaner around your feet. The real gem is the General Manager. If you even consider this place, go and meet him first---guaranteed you will turn and run (unless your looking for a Used Car Salesman to run your workout center.) Lastly, if you try to terminate your membership--even if after a year and there are no more comittmernts--GOOD LUCK! they will claim to lose your termination paper 3 times, while they continually beg you to stay. Now that Life Fitness has opened down the street, this Gold's Facility has it's days numbered.
Pros: Sometimes you get to use free towels, most of the time they charge. Cons: They will do whatever it takes to keep on charging your account.
I don't recommend signing up with Gold's Gym to anyone. They will give you guys give a hard time with canceling payments. All they ever want is my money even when I cancelled over 6 months ago. I am still going through this hassle with cancelling the contract with Gold's Gym company. DO NOT SIGN UP WITH THEM.
