Recorded live at The Royal Albert Hall, London, England on February 14, 1974. Originally released on Polydor Records UK (2383 303) in 1974. Includes liner notes by John W. Russo. All tracks have been remastered. Recorded in the mid-'70s at the height of Petula Clark's easy listening phase, LIVE IN LONDON consists almost entirely of early '70s soft rock hits recorded in the classic '70s easy listening style--think lush strings and woodwinds. The songs are well chosen, avoiding schmaltzier areas. A medley of Gilbert O'Sullivan hits--yes, in some countries he had more than one--including "Get Down," and of course, "Alone Again (Naturally)," is included, while a swaying "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" and the gentle "You've Got a Friend" are both delightful. The album's centerpiece, though, is a medley bracketed by the Carpenters' "Yesterday Once More" that cunningly includes torch songs like "Mona Lisa" and a surprisingly effective "Your Cheatin' Heart," in place of the expected '50s rock. |
