Tamba 4: Jose "Bebeto" De Castilho E Souza (vocals, flute, bass); Dorio Ferreira (guitar, bass, percussion); Luiz Eca (piano, organ); Rubens Ohana (drums, congas, jawbone). Producer: Creed Taylor. Recorded at the Van Gelder Recording Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey from September 5-14, 1967. Originally released on A&M (3004). Once the Tamba Trio, the Tamba 4 were a 1960's Brazilian jazz combo that incorporated samba, bossa nova, and other South American styles for a unique blend. WE AND THE SEA finds them mixing the seductive bossa nova strains with aspects of early 20th-century Euro-American classical music (think Copland, Stravinsky, Ives). In some ways, this ahead-of-their time band was the Weather Report of Brazilian music, in that they alternated the immediate with the experimental, the surreal with the swinging. |
