Details: In the 14th century, the Prato suffered a radical demographic loss as a result of famine and epidemics. Following this period of unrest, the wealthy families that survived the 1348 epidemic were able to rebuild their palaces. In 1512, Spanish troops pillaged the area and restored the deposed Medici Seigniory as a warning to the city of Florence. With the institution of the Diocese in 1653, Prato was given the title of city in place of its previous designation as "terra" (land).
