Sep 04 '00
04/09/00 -Magnus Norman recovered from the brink of defeat to beat Max Miryini in a thrilling five set match last night, and he now progresses into the fourth round of the US Open. Norman was two sets down and staved off four match points, eventually taking a fifth-set tie breaker to take the rain affected match 3-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 7-6.
Norman is now in the last 16, but could have so easily joined top seeds Kuerten, Kafelnikov and Henman on the scrapheap after battling it out for an incredible four hours and six minutes.
The victorious Swede said: `It was a great match, one of the most thrilling I e been a part of. I just happy to be a winner. It tough to be in a match that long. You are very happy tp pull it out. But it takes a few hours before you know you are won.
Norman needed three match points to finish Miryni off and will now face Germany Nicholas Kiefer in the next round.
Norman concluded: `On the last point, I tried to hit it to his feet. He made a good volley but I made the passing shot. It skill but it also a lot of luck. A good player has luck at the right moment.?
