Just what is tennis elbow?

Well, to be quick and to-the-point, it isn't just involved with tennis, as the name infers. What it is caused by is an inflammation of the tendons that cause you to bend your wrist back (extend). The medical definition, if you want to be specific, is an inflammation of the insertion of the wrist extensor tendons over the lateral epicondyle". So, it's not really a muscle problem, it's more of a type of tendinitis.
Relief? Well, there's many theories and few facts. One person says to try a different sized grip, another says anti-vibration devices, another will tell you a strap around your forearm.
The ONLY way to help relieve it is to relax your tennis playing time. This is the type of injury that will stay around a while. Immediate treatment is needed, or it won't go away. What I recommend is some wrist stretching and strengthening exercises, a good warm-up, anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drug treatments, and icing the area after treatment. A good check-up with your doctor probably won't hurt a thing, either. But as long as you take care of the problem, most of the time it won't hurt you to keep playing. Just make sure you listen to your body, because it knows better than anything else when enough is enough.
Best of luck!
