In addition to job search engine and resume posting, careerbuilder gives you access to tips and articles that can help to polish your skills and presentation to an employer. Why is this important? Job search is great, but your job search won't get you the job. Neither will your resume. What gets you the job is the interview.
As you enter the careerbuilder site, the first thing you will see is the job search area. This is important. The most important thing to a jobseeker, at least at first, is finding a job to apply for, and this section should be the first and most obvious section of a site. Careerbuilder's search allows you to be as narrow or specific as you want, allowing you to search for all job types, in all locations, and also by keyword.
Careerbuilder also has a feature in their mega job search which allows you to search for jobs posted in other internet search sites. This is helpful and could save you some time. Be aware, however, that this feature is only as good as the communication between the sites. You will not get all the results from, or even any results, for a another search engine using this feature, even if they exist at that other site. I tested this using America's Job Bank. I found 15 hits with AJB, but careerbuilder did not have any results with AJB. However, it did have some results from other services I did not test. If you want to do a thorough job search, look up and use the individual job search engines.
The parts that really impress me are the advice and insight sections. The advice given here echo what I have read in so many job search books, as well as my own advice that I give to job seekers. It is good advice and worth your time to study. There is advice on most aspects of your job search; job hunting, resume, cover letters, interviews, negotiating. I was impressed to find articles and suggestions that were new to me, helping me in my own career.
If you don't use careerbuilder as your primary job search tool, that is fine. You should use many tools in your job search. Careerbuilder just gives you the advantage of a toolbox, on-line.
