Helping you baby become a Frequent Flyer!

Jun 02 '00

My husband and I both work for Continental Airlines. We have taken our 18 month daughter on 6 round trips since she was 6 months old.

Flying with a baby isn't an easy task, but can be worthwhile if you preplan. First, make sure that the diaper bag is packed with plenty of bottles, food, snacks, toys, diapers, wipies, and a change of clothes, and a blanket. (The air conditioning can make the airplane cold at times).

There are no changing tables onboard the airplane, so make sure the baby has a new diaper on before boarding the aircraft. If necessary, you can attempt to change the diaper in the row you're sitting in.

The strollers can be brought to the gate, and then checked at the gate to be loaded underneath the aircraft.

Give the baby a bottle on takeoff and landing to avoid earaches from the change in air pressure. The constant sucking action prevents the ears from becoming blocked. If the bottle needs to be heated up, ask the flight attendant to fill the vomit bag with warm water. The bag will not leak, and it is a great tool for heating up bottles.

If you have a car seat for the baby, you will probably be asked to put it in the window seat. In an emergency, this procedure will make it easier for passengers to get out of the row. If the car seat was not in the window seat, it would block people from exiting the row.

If small enough, diaper bags can be stowed on the floor, underneath the seat in front of you. Otherwise it must be stowed in the overhead compartment.

As your baby gets older, it gets harder to entertain the baby, especially on long flights. On our last trip, when my daughter was 15 months old, she cried for the first hour of the trip. I actually heard someone a few rows back say, "Someone shut that kid up!" Finally she went off to sleep.

The reason she was crying was because she was off her schedule. If at all possible, try to plan around your baby's schedule. This will make for a more pleasant trip for all!
