Disney Honeymoon -Ins and Outs

Jan 29 '00

Yes, I am one of the millions of crazies that ventured a honeymoon in Disney World. Did I love it? Oh, yeah! Would I do it again? In a heartbeat!

I have been to Disney World 5 times during various seasons. The best advice I can offer is to go during the off-season, meaning avoid the summer, spring break time and the week between Christmas and New Years. Although Disney is well designed to handle crowds, I can't say the same about the people making up those crowds! Besides, with the growing cost of theme park tickets, you will won't to see as much as possible in the amount of time you have. Long lines can shorten a day (and your patience) faster than you might be prepared for.

Here's a quick breakdown of specific park highlights:

MGM Studios is growing every year. What once took half a day to see, now takes all day. The newest rides, Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Rock 'n Rollercoaster, are not for the weak hearted, but definitely a must see! The pre-shows alone are worth waiting for! Also, stick around for Fantasmic at the end of the night -you won't be disappointed.

Epcot is very much the same as its been for years, but still very entertaining, especially if you love various cultures and cuisines. The Disney engineers are trying to update some of the attractions in Future World, but as of last fall they were still under construction. Innoventions has been remodeled, but I was not very impressed with it. Epcots newest attraction is an additional World Showcase that houses many countries in one large building. I highly recommend taking the time to enjoy this. Don't miss Honey I Shrunk the Audience and the new Journey into Imagination ride. Illuminations 2000 is spectacular!

The Animal Kingdom did not impress me at all. When I visited many attractions were yet to be opened and the other ones were nothing to shout about. At the cost of a park ticket, I expected much more than I saw. The Tree of Life is interesting, but not up to par with the hype. If you are a big zoo lover, you will probably enjoy this park, but otherwise its a waste of time. The only rewarding part of my day was the safari ride which is definitely worth seeing, but does not carry the park by itself.

Last, but not least, we come to the Magic Kingdom. I am a big kid so this park remains my favorite. An absolutely must-see is the Fantasy in the Sky fireworks complete with Tinkerbell flying across the night sky. (And yes, Tinkerbell is a live person!) Beware of ExtraTERRORestrial Encounter if you have a weak stomach and don't be afraid to venture a run on Space Mountain. I wasn't too impressed by American Presidents, but otherwise most all attractions are worth visiting, depending on whether or not you have children along.

The biggest drawback to Disney is the food. For the most part, restaurants serve expensive, mediocre meals. My best advice is to eat your main meal at lunchtime when prices are a bit more reasonable.

One last quick note. Attention parents of infants -Disney World has made special accomodations with you in mind, especially breastfeeding mothers. Epcot and Magic Kingdom have VERY nice baby centers providing a private, comfortable room for feeding with anything you might need and more. MGM Studios has a similar room, not quite as luxurious, but private and nice.
