I recently used priceline for the first time, and I learned alot about it which is useful to share.
I spent a couple of days shopping around for a ticket to Florida for Christmas (about 5 days, weekend stay), and the lowest price I was able to find in my searching was about $375.00. Slightly pricy, but not too bad, and it was a Christmas trip.
So, I decided to try priceline.com (thanks William Shatner, lol). I put in a bid for the same days, and bid $250. Within an hour, I had a ticket...not bad at all!
Here are a few things people should know:
- You can't pick the airline you want...they find one which will accept your price.
- You don't choose the times you want, just the days you want to travel (although, you can choose not to fly at 'off' times, like depart at 5am or 1am).
- At times, you can get a choice of airport (I live in the Washington DC area, and it gave me a choice of Dulles, Reagan National or BWI).
And the big item:
- If they find a ticket for you, you definitely have purchased it. So, don't try it unless you really want it!
Overall, for me it was worth it. I said 'what the heck, if i get a ticket at this price, great...otherwise, no big loss'. It turned out great for me, but in general it is only useful for certain types of travellers and certain travel situations.
