I saw this show in NY over Thanksgiving break and it seems like this one is going to stay awhile. I see a lot of shows on Broadway and usually get bored at some point. This is one show which had my attention throughout!
---------------------------------
THE PLOT IN A NUTSHELL:
---------------------------------
This show is centered around Marjorie Taub (Linda Lavin), a middle aged, upper class woman living as the wife to a successful doctor (Tony Roberts). Her humdrum life changes when a friend from her past (Michelle Lee) randomly and accidentally comes to her door one day in search of an apartment.
-----------------
PERFORMANCES:
-----------------
-Linda Lavin (Marjorie) is perfect for this show. We see her evolve from pathetic to a woman on top of the world.
-Michelle Lee (Lee), of Knots Landing fame, plays a character she typically does not play -a fun, sexy, world travelled lady. It is fun to see her in this role.
-Tony Roberts (Ira) successfully plays the straight man to Lavin's evolution.
-Shirl Bernheim (Frieda) plays Lavin's mother. She steals the show and should be a strong reason to see this show. She reminded me of Estelle Getty's character Sophia in The Golden Girl. She is a little old lady who is quick in her dialogue and curses. Hysterical!
-Anil Kumar- (Mohammad)-he plays Marjorie's doorman and plays nicely off of Linda Lavin.
-------------------------
DIALGOUE AND DIRECTION:
-------------------------
Another great strength to this show is the quick dialogue and retorts. It is very New York. Also, the pacing is terrific and the director makes use of the entire set -making sure to use the characters in all areas of the stage. Speaking of the stage, the set is beautiful and you feel like you're really in an upper west side apartment.
Overall, I highly recommend this play to anyone visiting New York and wants to see a good show. This well crafted show by Charles Busch contains a good story, good dialogue and solid performances from established stars. For more info, see: http://www.allergistswife.com
