My family and I joined Slickrock Adventures for their "Adventure Week" in February of 1998. I think it's safe to say that all 12 people on the trip had the time of their lives. In 9 days we toured the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins, mountain biked through jungle and citrus groves, hiked to and explored Chumpiate Cave (a Mayan cave containing clay pots and a ceremonial altar, sealed up 1100 years ago), rafted the Macal River (class III and IV), rafted and explored a slow underground river (incredible!), boated out to Long Caye (Slickrock's private island) in Golver's Reef, and spent the rest of the trip snorkeling, kayaking, scuba diving, windsurfing, lounging in hammocks, and eating. The people of Belize are the friendliest I've ever met, the trip leaders are knowledgeable, fun, and responsible, and the food (mostly homemade or fresh-caught by locals) is outstanding! (Three of us are vegetarians, and at each jungle lodge a special meal had been planned for us before we even arrived!) The jungle lodges are rustic but comfortable, and you wake to the sounds of tropical birds (maybe even monkeys) every morning in jungle.
Slickrock (www.slickrock.com) also offers trips that just focus on kayaking, caving, and diving/paddling.
These people have been running trips in Central America since 1981, and they really have created an excellent experience. They do all the planning, you have all the fun. I'd recommend them to anyone.(Appropriate for family, friends, couples, and singles.)
