In my opinion, the minivan commercial is the best possible choice for an advertisement for Epinions.com. Viewers unfamiliar with the site will see a person, who could be their neighbor, outlining the problems she had with a product. Isn’t that what Epinions.com is all about?
This commercial is not going for shock value like the beer, iMac, or breastpump ads, and yet it holds the viewer’s attention. Karen comes across as an average consumer, unlike the college kids with the talking navels or the snowboarder; therefore, I feel more viewers will identify with her. Unlike the tent commercial, this Epinion detailed problems with a product. A consumer can read any advertisement or watch any commercial to gain the positive aspects of a product; however, finding the negatives is much more difficult. Therefore, I think viewers are more likely to check out Epinions.com.
This commercial is the very essence of what Epinions.com is meant to be. The advice is not from an expert, but from a typical consumer. Expert reviews could be found at a variety of places; consumers don’t need to come here for that. However, experts don’t always understand what typical consumers are looking for in a product. Karen was able to show flaws with her van that would drive people like herself nuts, and she was able to express them in terms that anyone would understand.
The Epinions staff gets an A+ from me on this one. This is a commercial that I can be proud to point to and tell my friends, “That’s what I’ve been telling you. Epinions is a great place to find the real scoop on anything you want to buy.”
