About braydenk
Not many people from my small town in Idaho move outside of the state, let alone move out of the state to pursue a post-graduate degree in something as abstract and academic as sociology. Thanks heavens for the small public library in my hometown, which saved me from a slow death of ignorance and loneliness. The experience of growing up in a small rural town also invigorated my senses and made me aware of the rough underbelly of human survival. Throughout junior high and high school, I would often spend my weekends helping local ranchers do odd jobs, including branding of cattle, doctoring of sheep, moving irrigation pipe, and other labors that gave me a respect for the beauty of the land and appreciation of the hands of those that harvest it. I guess my western upbringing instilled in me an appreciation for authors like Cormac McCarthy, who see life as a constant struggle of people against people, people against nature, and nature against nature. Competition is a grim reality of life that often rears its head in ugly ways. I enjoy authors that entertain by tearing away the romantic peripheral layer to reveal the guts of life.
