How to Make Money with the Income Share Program and Why it is the Right Thing for Epinions as a Whole
by netKat | Apr 04 '00
Being a very analytical person, and wanting to make money, I have devoted a lot of time today to reviewing my income share bonuses and trying to draw some conclusions on what will work under this new program.

I've also been humbled by the...

Success at Epinions (Reply to this comment)
by bizewriter
Having formerly worked as an expert for a major Internet presence, whereas parallel pay and work quality issues existed, I can relate.

The page view method appears to make sense in the Epinions environment, and thankfully people rate the advice. This would seem to level the playing field while encouraging and rewarding good reviewers and discouraging page views of poor ones.

Most people here seem honest and fair in this process. It is very clear what goes around, comes around, as is the overall effort and quality of an opinion.

I was on a rating system at an "expert" site where 'experts' frequently tried to drag each other through the mud. It was obnoxious and the tactics didn't work in the long run.

People who put in the time and effort as well as provided quality help, came out on top. Expert advice is often subjective, medical help is a good example. Often laypersons win out over degreed professionals. I'm not talking about medical advice but rather help, information and experience.

The primary keys to success are to concentrate on your target audience, put yourself in their shoes, be unique and work with the intent of helping rather than selling others.

Good Luck to Everyone,

Donna

Old news but good advice (Reply to this comment)
by DrDad
The news about the change in status and pay rate for experts may be old, but the advice you give for earning Income Share is great.

Anyone wanting to reap I.S. benefits would be wise to follow every word of your advice carefully.

Great post.

I am beginning to understand a little more all the time. I am so new I don't understand all that I probably should know. I do know that I have a passion for writing, and that there are a few not many but a few that are enjoying my writings as well; which I appreciate. Thank you for helping.

"To see the top ten in each category, go to your user page and click on the Eroyalty column of any of your reviews (it's all the way on the right)."

The best things on the web are point and click.

What an excellent epinion on epinions! I don't pay all that much attention to the whole issue of eRoyalties vs. Income Share vs. Experts, but I know a whole lot more than I did before, thanks to netKat's thoughtful article. Thanks!

Kat-

Very nice review. I particularly liked the part about you thanking the non-experts. That was downright good of you to do so. I am one of those people who got hurt by the Income Share Program(ISP), so it is hard to write reviews knowing I will end up making $.01 per read, and end up not making that much from the ISP. Ah well. I really do enjoy writing at Epinions, and knowing that I actually am helping people make better decisions, although it isn't evident by my ISP... Grrrr. Well, anyway, great epinion. Keep it up.

Best,
Jay

Re: The flaw in your argument... (Reply to this comment)
by netKat
I know that there are plenty of experts (de facto and otherwise) who are not designated as such on this site. I do believe that those of us who have the title have earned it, and continue to earn it, however the fact that we were plucked out of the masses and others were not indicates to me that there is fortune involved.

It is also apparent that the job description of experts has changed. No longer are we compensated for being the MVPs, as in your analogy, but rather we are level with the rest of the team. It is up to us to stand out through the usefulness of our reviews in the eyes of the fans, rather than in the eyes of the management.

Thanks for your feedback! :)

Re: Expert Category (Reply to this comment)
by netKat
Being an expert has not been rendered meaningless, but rather it has been changed.

The goal of the site is for the benefit of the readers. The writers, experts included, must alter their content to meet the needs of those readers in order to make the most Income Share. This is just plain capitalism.

I personally enjoy your writing very much. I do hope you continue. I would really miss your work if you did not.

Thanks Helen!

It is more of an interesting challenge to us now to try to understand what the consumers want to read.

One thing I absolutely LOVE about you is that you see problems as potential opportunities... just like me! xoxoxoxo
