Leaving comments - To Think Or Not To Think

Mar 30 '00 (Updated Apr 21 '00)

First off, I would like to say, the comments section is a great way for the readers to reach the writers. Comments we most often see are - "I gave you this rating because blah blah blah," or "Oh I disagree with you on blah blah blah". Unfortunately, sometimes you don't always get to hear what you want. Sometimes, instead of just plain disagreements, you get more than what you asked for or something completely unrelated. Bring in the flame throwers - is what I often see. And a drama not needed in epinions occurs..and the story goes on and on and....

Read the review carefully before you comment on something
Sometimes we often shoot ourselves in the foot when we misread something in the review and leave a comment completely out of place. This is part of the no_thinking process most people have, including myself, it's human nature. However, it almost seems to the writer that the person leaving the comment is attacking the writer. Which often times isn't true, just that people write differently and don't necessarily project their feelings well through their comments.

Important thing is READ THE REVIEW CAREFULLY before commenting on something. This will save you some embarrassment in the future if the writer decides to point out your mistake.. The writer will see your point clearly and say "Ah hah...so this is what my weakness lies" instead of "What is this j*rk saying?! Didn't he/she/it read my review stating blah blah blah? Is he/she/it blind!?".

Think before you comment on something
If the writer writes something that you don't quite comprehend, do not hesitate to stop and think - hmm what is she/he/it trying to say? If you cannot understand a single word the review says, leave a comment stating why. People think and write differently, just because you write in a particular way doesn't mean that everyone else thinks like you do.
And try not to leave something like "You stupid piece of sh**, what the h** does this mean?", not only does that sound bad, you look bad even though you're being honest about it. Besides that, your boss wouldn't really like to see you reply an email to an important client in that way.

Some of the people here leave NRs for epinions and comment politely that they would change their rating if the review were to be changed in certain ways. That seems reasonable enough and the writer wouldn't feel dumb or vengeful enough to go back to all your epinions to NR them.

Expecting comments
Don't think that everyone has the same likings as you do, some people will detest you from the minute they meet you, it's the same thing when it comes to writing. So don't count on getting agreements. It's not like you have to prepare yourself for war or anything, it's just their point of view on your comments.

Slam, Bam and Thank you M'am/Sir
Slamming people for disagreements is rude, but even I do that sometimes and so will you, it's human nature. Everyone has a mean streak of his/her own. At the very least, try to be civil before you shoot someone down with a barrage of unsavory comments, it's just common sense.
