About Me
I'm a thirty-something mom of three boys, ages 1.5, 6 and 9.
If you want me to check out your reviews, leaving me a comment on one of mine or dropping me an email is a good way to get my attention.
My pet peeve about Epinions is that a lot of people seem to grade a review mainly on length. Longer isn't always better, IMO. I like a concise review that gets to the point more than a long review that includes a lot of details that either don't matter and/or are obvious. And I prefer personal experience to strictly factual information that I could get anywhere.
How I Rate
Very Helpful -- For me to rate a review as Very Helpful, it must contain a good mix of product detail and personal experience, be clearly written, and of an appropriate length for the amount of information being provided. (Reviews that are so long that I have trouble finding the relevant product details will usually get rated only Helpful. Putting a summary up top can help if your review is very long.)
White space and headers can help take a borderline review from Helpful to Very Helpful.
Helpful --
A helpful review generally contains both product details and personal recommendations. I usually rate a review as Helpful rather than Very Helpful when it contains both types of information, but leaves me with some questions about the product or the reviewer's experience with it.
I will sometimes rate a review that gives a clear description of one especially good or bad feature of a product a Helpful rating even if it does not provide a good overview of the product as a whole, if I feel that the information provided would be important in a consumer's decision-making process.
A poorly-written or poorly-organized review that might otherwise be rated Very Helpful based on the information it contains will probably be rated Helpful instead. Similarly a review with a Very Helpful amount of information that is buried in too much irrelevant detail may also get rated Helpful by me, though I am in the minority on this.
Somewhat Helpful --
A review that describes some personal experience with a product but without giving sufficient product detail for a reader to know what the product is/does/etc. will usually get rated Somewhat Helpful.
Not Helpful --
I don't think I've ever used this category, but if a review was on-topic but did not contain any personal experience or opinion about the product, I'd rate it Not Helpful. An example might be a review that contained only cut-and-pasted product information from the manufacturer or copied from the box.
If you ever have questions about how I rated your review, please feel free to email me.
