Cold Turkey Is Best
Jul 18 '00
In my experience just quitting cold turkey is best. It's a good idea not to quit smoking anytime around a holiday-too stressful. But summer is best! It's as simple as that-just quit....OK, I know I'm gonna get it now from all smokers who have quit. Just hear me out. Bad thing about going cold turkey is those awful "nick fits". Some people will even have nausea, headaches, or loss of appetite. But you have to remember: you are coming off of a very addictive drug. Find a way to occupy your time. A lot of people smoke simply because they are bored or need something to keep their hands busy-the addiction is the side effect. Designate something as your smoking alternative. Example: whenever you feel "the urge" to smoke play a game on the Gameboy, eat some pretzels, eat a mint, etc...
I managed my cravings by chewing on gum, toothpicks, or straws-things that you can "eat" without gaining weight. To get my "nick fix" I just hung around with people that smoked. True, for a while I was getting that horrid second hand smoke but after awhile once I got used to not actually having a cigarette in my hand-I also got to where I didn't need to be around smokers 'cause I didn't need a fix.
Another suggestion if you simply CAN'T quit cold turkey: when you open a pack of cigs take them all out and cut them in half. That way you will feel like you are smoking as usual but you will really be smoking half as much. Once you get used to that-try cutting down to lights (still cutting in half).
*Don't carry a full pack of cigarettes with you-the more you have available to you, the more you will be likely to smoke.
